ouch !!! oooooooohhhhh i hate Backup Exec !!!

who hate it like me? There are errors and errors and errors and bugs and bugs and fixes and fixes and "No more data is on the tape" and "Object invoked has disconnected from its clients".... i hate it a lot

Does someone knows any software that MAKE backup?

I'm really starting to love NTBACKUP.

Try using Arcserve, you'll then realise Backup Exec is like a proverbial 'walk in the park'.

What are the errors you are experiencing? What hardware and software setup do you have?

Have you tried ?

Cheers

I installed BE 8.5 on Win 2K Advanced Server with one remote agent and one for exchange 2K (Hardly an unusual configuration I would have thought!) and it was a nightmare. Then the PCs raid system messed up (it was an old Server) and I have had to do it all again! I must agree that this software is rubbish, I have heard that arcserve is worse and I can believe it as CA (computer associates) are a dreadfull company.
The support form veritas flatters to decieve and the manual is also of little use. Finally I would like to point out that their SQL Agent is the biggest con ever - £2K ish and you are better backing up to file then to tape.
Will someone please develope a cross network Back Up solution that works!!!!

Otavio, it sounds like you have more technical problems than just your backup software. We just upgraded to BE 8.6 from Arcserve 6.61 and it works great. Sure there are snags here and there, and you have to stay on top of it, but I challenge you to find anything different. I can say that BE blows Arcserve out of the water, and the support is a helluva lot better.

I can understand that you feel the need to vent, but try using this website constructively. You might actually learn something, and possibly resolve your issues.

In the thread which you created Mar 19, 2002 called General tape error, I suggested that you try updating the build to 3572 or apply the Media Fix.

Instead of being "constructive" and respond to my suggestion, you have created a new post with no statements to back yourself up being totally flawed - with no chance of resolution to your issue.

In my experience with all the Backup software over the years, Veritas Backup Exec and Computer Associate's Arcserve prove to be the most reliable. When you say a certain software is buggy there are other considerations to take into account. It is running on other OS's which could be at fault (service pack? MDac version? permissions? Even hardware...

Truley some more research, ie. checking event logs, Microsoft Technet, Software Vendor Websites, Hardware Vendor Websites, Search engines and of course Tek-Tips! should get you up and running. If you have done the above, then I would be more comfortable for you to vent.

If you go to the Windows 2000 native backup. Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Backup, have a look at help/about. You might get a surprise.

Hey people, sorry bout that... I'm little "overstated" that day. But that is true, it's very difficult to make 100% day-by-day perfect backups. We have to work to this, i'm just starting at that. Good luck to all of us, we need just a little patience (little?). =)

Thanks for all your help, i'm progressing at that.

Cheers,

Otavio

I hear you Otavio, I've been working on my backup/restore straegy for a month now, trying to get it perfect to the point where it just behaves perfectly. this isnt easy given the sometimes strenuous setup of various backup suites but it feels good once it's said and done.

I just returned my license for veritas xchange agent, not that I dont like it or it doesnt work well but the setup I just finished works AWESOME.

Installed DLT1 tape drive local to node1 of my xchange cluster, I'm using NTBACKUP b/c I love its simplicity (veritas owns ntbackup) I'm getting 1gb per 5 mins this way.

As for bricks level, I set xchange to keep deleted items for 30 days, I got the space so why not, if this doesnt work out in the long run I'll use Xmerge soemhow.

I don't think that BE is that bad. Not that I don't think things could be better. We have had problems with all our agents since we upgraded from 8.5 to 8.6 and no help from tech-support that we could use for anything.

If you want a good backupsoftware look at NetBackup Datacenter. We will change to that.
We got version 3.4 but since 4.5 should be out in april we will implement that version.
