I get the following error message on Windows 2000 Server SP4 when attempted to backup:

REQUIRED MEDIA MISSING THERE IS NO UNUSED MEDIA AVAILABLE WITH SELECTED TYPE ADD UNUSED MEDIA OR CLICK CANCEL. NOTE IT MAY TAKE UP TO 60 SECONDS FOR REMOVAL STORAGE TO RECOGNISE NEW MEDIA - PRESS CANCEL.

Is there a fix for this?

Good day saddatabid

Just a couple of questions so I can get a grasp on your problem.

1. Does this occur when you try to run a back up?
2. What type of back up system are you using?

Guys,

Yes it happened when I try to run backup (ntbackup) on my win2k server sp4. And I have found a fix for this.

It is something to do with the scsi board which obviously supports that DAT drive.

If go into My Computer > Manage > Removable Storage > Physical Locations > SONY SDT-9000 SCSI Sequential Tape Drive > Drives.

Right click Drives and "Mark as clean"! Run your ntbackup and it works!

It probably is a bug in Win2k or scsi board issue but no mention of such error message on Microsoft TechNet.

Let me know how you get on?

Thanks

Thats great SA
and thanks for posting the fix -

Maybe you should write a faq on TT for all to find.

I have the same problem on a similar system but when I go to My Computer > Manage > Removable Storage > Physical Locations > Exabyte VXA-2 SCSI Tape Drive > Media, I do not have my media in the Details pane to "Prepare".

If I go to ...Physical Locations > Exabyte VXA-2 SCSI Tape Drive > Drives then Right-Click Drive 0 and choose "Mark as clean" (only place I have a "Mark as clean") it doesn't change my problem.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Tony

I have the same problem as Tony. But if I select the Mark as clean option. I get the following message:
Removable Storage:"A resource required for this operation is disabled"

I had some problems with server before and I disabled some services (also Removable storage). But I have restarted the Removable storage service and still have the same error.

I solved my problem. I didn't have a enable libary option selected under the properties for my tape drive.

Similar problems:
If go into My Computer > Manage > Removable Storage > Physical Locations > HP C5683A SCSI Sequential Tape Drive > Drives - 'white x inside red circle' icon is shown. But if I select the Mark as clean option. I get the following message: Removable Storage: "The resource required for this operation does not exist" and under "State" column - not present, empty is shown.

Have been experiencing backup problems with Veritas backup recently and came across this thread.

Patrick,

as I said I had the same issue. Check in properties Removable Storage > Physical Locations > HP C5683A SCSI Sequential Tape Drive > Drives if you have the enable drive option selected. And in Removable Storage > Physical Locations > HP C5683A SCSI Sequential Tape Drive if you have the enable libary option selected. When I set this two options it fixed my problem and I was able to do a ntbackup.

frl - many thanks, both of these items are checked. The strange situation I have is that a Veritas Backup fails on a folder containing a specific program (Phoenix Gold - school data base software). We have replaced the DDS drive and tried new tapes. At present I am running an NTBackup at 01.00 and then a Veritas backup of this at 02.00 and all is working at present, backup of a backup!
Will see how it goes, at least all the tips and ideas can only be helpful.

Hi Guys,

Does anyone know if the ntbackup creates a log file *.edb each time a backup job is executed? Is it okay to assume that these files will no longer be needed and must be deleted?

Any help with creating a batch file to deleted all *.edb files will be much appreciated?

Thank you

Patbo -- I have the same problem as you. The red icon for the drive means that Veritas drivers are installed for the drive. I am unable to enable the library when veritas drivers are installed. I also get the disabled error message. And I also have had a horrible time getting Veritas to do back-ups. Just bought a new drive, as per their recommendation, and I have the same errors that I did with the last drive. Keep me posted if you find a fix.
