Windows XP Pro 2002 - SP2

Client has "upgraded to I.E. 7 and now the Web Browser will not connect to ANY website - Including the Microsoft Updates page.

The networking is fine as I can see the internal network and access shares and what have you, but I.E. 7 just states it cannot open whatever website it happens to be pointed at at the time.

I have other clients with the same results after "upgrading" to I.E 7 (various Win versions from 2000 to XP Home to XP Pro).

Also one note: The Microsof Firewall (in the MS Security bundle) is stating it cannot open due to an undefined error.

Anyone have any idea what needs to be fixed of changed to allow this clien to use I.E. 7?

Did the installation finish without errors? Is there any chance the machine is infected with some spywere? Does it work in no add-ons mode?

Smah..

No luck...According to the client the install went without errors (of course thats their story and they are sticking to it)

As for Spyware or anything of that sort...nothing shows up on any scans we have done with various products.

As for the add ons mode...the only add on listed is Macromedia Flash...Tried it with out add ons and still we get the same issues.

One note further...we ARE getting a message stating it Has failed and asking if we would like to send an Error Report to Microsoft...

You might re-install with all antivirus & antispyware software disabled. These can sometimes prevent proper installation.

Start, Run, CMD

netsh winsoc reset

Wait for a message that a restart is needed.
Reboot the computer. Test.

A link to support the smah suggestion:

I warn you that some other programs can conflict. I recommend downloading IE 7, then pull the plug on your internet access.

Disable the Firewall
Disable the Antivirus
Disable the anti-Spyware

and install. See the notes by the remarkable Aussie MVP Sandi Hardemeir:
(I am told there are other exceptional Aussie MVPs).

IE can also be installed in Safe mode to help lessen the chance of conflicts during installation. If it does turn out to be an installation related problem, we can thank MVP Robear Dyer for the technical description: horked install
