Do they improve video quality somehow? I dont get it.

saving a video uncompressed takes loads of diskspace.
A codec(coder-decoder) compresses the file so its smaller and easier to handle. A good codec can compress a videofile to 600mb for an hour of film and the quality is still really good.

Could you step me through that process, please. I'd appreciate it.

Your best bet is to use DIVX as a codec since it maintains quality along with smaller video file sizes. So far, theren's bnothing comprable to it.

(get the paid for version, its worth it, cause nothing is worth downloading or supporting spyware programs = they use Gator )

They have instructions on their websiteo n how to use their codecs in your video prgrams.
