Greetings everyone.

Do you like XP?

I just thought I would collect the opinions of my peers to see what you all think. How do you like XP compared to 2000 and 98? Do you recommend it to your customers?

My opinion:
So, I'm 1 test away from being an MCSE and have half a dozen other misc certs. I've worked with about 50 machines running XP home and pro. I have yet to be impressed with XP. I have a strong dislike for XP. So strong that I have begun to recommend my customers NOT get XP and instead order 2000 Pro on all new PCs. It is my impression that XP flat out doubles the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) when compared to 2000 Pro. What I mean is that it takes double the time to setup/configure and double the time to do anything as a User running applications. I will speculate that it will be about a year before I recommend my customers buy XP over 2000. I think it will take Intel that long to get a processor fast enough to run XP the way it should be - without those nasty delays.

Your turn:
Is it just me being an old-school windows 2000 die-hard or do the rest of you see it the same way?

Why is it that Microsoft is always bragging about how XP is so much better than 98. I have yet to see Microsoft say XP is better than 2000. Why is that?

Note: I do expect a more biased opinion here than say on the Windows 2000 forum.

Please, I don't wish to start a flame war here. I just want your honest opinions.

Mike,

Ask most IT people and they'll agree - Xp home is pants.

XP Pro, on the other hand, is basically 2000 with bells & whistles on.

Although I use many flavors of Unix and have used windows since the very first version came out, I usually am highly skeptical of any new OS release from Microsoft that is touted to be New and Improved better than before. Windows ME is such a fine example of why I usually am skeptical. Other than one other Windows home version that came out a few years back, Windows ME has to be the worst OS EVER. Heck DOS is better than ME. I am a Windows NT fan to the point that it can actually serve as it is created and I do like Windows 2000. But skeptically I installed Windows XP because the ME that was on the laptop from someone else's previous install was giving me nightmares. I figured might as well see what the hype is about and doesn't hurt to figure it out so I can help my clients who happen to have it. Well I have to say with XP Pro I find it highly stable and I don't have any problems. But I truly think that Microsoft knowingly leaves out code or puts in some code to sabotage the Home Version because the one problem I have had is a constant Runtime Error on Line 209 and I can not seem to find any resolution to getting rid of this constant annoying error. It doesn't appear on the surface to cause any problems but the one thing I have noticed after receiving that error is any webmail now has been deleted and *poof* disappeared like it never was there in the first place. I find this extremely wierd since any email located via webmail should be located on the webserver at another location. So if XP is marking it delete and refreshing my webpage or what I don't know. But its only on this one particular computer running Windows XP Home Edition do I get this Runtime error Line 209 "Object doesn't support this property or method" error and which the only thing acting wierd is my incredibly disappearing webmail right before my very eyes. On my Windows XP Pro edition thats on my laptop, I don't lose webmail and I get no errors. On my other desktop that's temporarily running Win 98 I don't get these problem. Its only on a friends Dell Dimension 4500S running Windows XP Home edition. If anyone has had a similar problem or nows how to fix this please email me and let me know. THanks. Oh and last soap box speel, I think Microsoft purposefully releases OS in the condition they currently do so they can tweak it and change the look and call it an upgrade so we have to buy it. I think the term that someone told me was called "Planned Obsolesence"?

Anyhow thanks for listening/reading and if you have any ideas about my prob, thanks for the helpful information that you can tell me.

I have been running XP for a week now, I must say that it is pretty. On the other hand, I crashed it 3 times on the 2nd day of use. Sorry to say to those who swear by the cloze that it "doesn't crash", I think that its as skeptical as any other MS releases.

The crash was , as XP error reporting says "a hardware fault". I have an AMD 1G box with 640MB RAM. All hardware are considerably new (none of them are a year old) and they have worked extremely very well in Win2000 (which rarely crashes on me).

I have worked with Windows since Win3.1, Linux and MAC OS and I must say that in terms of stabilty, Linux is holding up on the top. Sure it isnt as user frenly as Windows is, its kinda a drag to config stuffs that are childs play in windows, and some hardware arent compatible, but its really dificult to crash even intentionally. :) Information is free....dont hog it!
