Hi,

Any one please, I have a Compaq Presario 700 laptop, running XP. I had a problem with my computer one time and used the restore disc that was provided. I did not partition my drive assuming (I know, I know) that all would be well after the installation of the restore disc. Now I do not have a CD/DVD. I see it in my bios but not in disk manager. How do I get my CD/DVD back? Thank you in advance for you time and efforts.

The restore disk usually re-does the partitions anyway. You should have two "restore" disks, one that actually restores the system, and one with all the utilities (drivers). You may have to go to the Compaq website to download the drivers for the CD/DVD. Did the "restore disk" come on CD, or floppy?

Thank you kindly for responding. I did down load the drivers from compaq website and still nothing. I did not have any burning software on my computer. Thanks for your in-put though. I am open to any furhter suggestion. Please help.

So, just to make sure. Have you installed the cd\dvd rom drivers yet? If you installed the cd\dvd drivers and they are the correct ones, then it should work.

What does dev mgr show?
Sorry, just trying to understand the situation better. Not only that, im not so great on laptops either.

Again, i dont know that much about laptops, so, unfortunately, i had better turn this over to someone who hoes.

I am going to hazard a guess since i posted here in the first place, perhaps shouldnt have, so this is only until someone else takes over.
One guess is that you are still missing something in the way of software at or near the bios level. In other words perhaps something in the second cdrom you have.
Another guess is the cd\dvd rom simply failed.
However, in your first post you mentioned you had a problem before and i havent been smart enuf to pick up on that and ask you what problem you had?
In the end, if you cant get things right, would it be easy to try another complete re-install? Surely you can retrieve what data you need to, say via a thumb drive, etc, since your cdrom is not available at present.
Now i have worked with some older Compaq desktops and they do that thing with putting the bios on a small section of the hard drive, perhaps the boot loader, something like that. I dont even know if it matters in this case, only food for thought is all.
Also, what version bios do you have and is there another new one? Dont know that that would help though.
Last, which should have been first, right click on my computer, click on manage, click on event viewer, click on system and report the event number for any "errors", not for "information", just errors. Report that here, may help if you see any errors.
Perhaps micker377 will take over, or one of the others who know more than I do.

Thanks garebo. I will try these step and keep you posted.

Great, least you have something to work with til someone else comes along. I find that sometimes i post when perhaps i shouldnt, so this is my way of correcting my habit. I shouldnt really have posted here in the first place as there are plenty of guys and gals here who know laptops and i really dont.
Some stuff is the same, but i cant very well, for instance, tell you to pull the cd\dvd rom and try another one, or i cant tell you to double check your master\slave settings, things you can check with a desktop, lol.

So some laptops issues are best left to experts who DO know them better than i do.
but in the meantime i have at least given you something to think about, lol.
We'll get to the bottom of this, im sure.
