My computer decided to stop booting up, and I could smell some burning in the case. It smelled like it was coming from the power supply, so I started there. As of now, I've replaced the power supply, motherboard, processor, and RAM. The damn thing still won't boot up.... The hard drive spins and the fans spin, but I get nothing else... no beeps, no video, nothing. All I can think of is that I should try another video card, but I really dont think that's the problem. The current system is:

Athlon XP 2600 processor
Asus 848LU SIS746 board (I can get the exact serial number if necessary)
512MB PC2100 (generic, tried 2 different DDR's)
Geforce4 card 64MB

Any ideas?

Not having a computer is killing me with work and school, so any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

This can be a number of things. Did you take all cards out like modem, sound, etc. This would have been my first move just to see if I could boot. Then the video. If you aren't getting anything it is usually that.

These things can be tricky to isolate sometimes. I would look at the CPU if you are not getting any beeps. Then I would check memory and then mainboard.

Did you ever find anything that appeared burnt?

Even without a video card you should still get a beep code.

Hope this helps, good luck.

Hi there,

first of all I would clear CMOS, then go over the Manual of the mainboard, double check the FSB setting, aswell as if the CPU is made for the MOBO...

unplug all unnecessary cards (sound, nic, etc.) just have the GFX card installed, unplug all drives... power on the PC... if it POSTS good... add the drives one at a time... until you find out what is boging down the system...

if the above don't work... try switching the RESET button with the POWER-ON button and power up the system with the RESET... do this with the RESET only plugged up... if it POSTS GOOD... then you know that the PowerSwitch is damaged and caused a loop in the POWER on/off circuit of the MoBo... replace or leave the RESET switch as power on...

ok, so I pulled the board out of the case, connected CPU, RAM, video, and power... and still, all I get is spinning fans. No post, no beep codes. Tried two different sticks of PC 2100 (generic, though). This is a brand new motherboard and processor I'm using. I also tried the same with my old motherboard and two different Athlon XP 1800 processors and I got the same results. Could the video card be doing this? I thought I'd get a beep code if the video was bad, but I dunno.

Brutal.

Check the power cables to your motherboard (may want to check the voltage using a volt-o-meter

Remove:

Your video card
Your memory
Your CMOS battery

Unplug your PC
Let the PC sit for 2 hours

Plug the PC back in
Start it up, do you get any beeps?
If you get beeps, shutdown and add the battery
Start it up, do you get any beeps?
If you get beeps, shutdown and add 1 stick of memory
Start it up, do you get any beeps?
If you get beeps, shutdown and add another stick of memory (repeat for each stick)
If you still get beeps add the video card and startup

Wherever it fails to beep, I'd check that part to see if it is bad.

Don't drink and post, save that for driving home!

Hi there,

sounds like your PSU is fried... if it does it with two diff mobos...

do follow CJ post... by unplugging the CMOS batt you clear the CMOS for sure...
