Hi everyone. New to here.

Windstream is my ISP. My connection speed has been 3 megs down for the last yr or two. About a month ago I noticed that Windstream had 6 megs down avail in this area. So I called to inqure about it. They told me it was avail but I needed a different modem, because my Speedstream 4200, prev supplied by them to me, was incompatable with this higher speed. So they promised to send me a new modem free of charge.

Several days later the modem arrives...it's another Speedstream 4200 lol. So I'm thinking, perhaps they did a firmware upgrade to this modem or something. So anyway, I install this modem and get connected to the web. The first thing I do is do some speed tests. I'm getting the exact same speed I was getting before.

So I call up Windstream and they verify that the techs did all of the necessary changeovers at the CO, and that I should be getting the faster speed. I can throw a rock and literally hit the CO, that's how close I am. So I know this is not a distance problem.

I decide to call Windstream back. This time they were going to let me speak to a tech. That went nowhere. This tech had such broken English that I was barely able to understand him most of the time. The first thing he asks, do I have cookies enabled? I was thinking, what does cookies have to do with anything, lol. So I pretty much cut that converstion short.

So I called again, hoping that I would at least get a tech that I could understand. Once again I get a tech with broken English. It's been 3 or 4 weeks and I still don't have this resolved. Is there some settings in my modem's online setup that I need to change or something, in order to enable the faster speed? Also I have nothing between the 4200 and the PC. It's just a basic setup, no external routers, etc. And one more thing, if the 4200 is incompatable with the higher speed, why did they send me another 4200?

Well, according to the Gigaset/Seimens website the Speedstream 4200 "Supports G.lite and full-rate ADSL, ADSL2, ADSL2+, and RE-ADSL". So I'd expect it to at least be capable of support downstream speeds of upto 8Mbps.

This device is a modem/router, and I assume you're connecting it up using the Ethernet/RJ45 port.

You said "My connection speed has been 3 megs down for the last yr or two.". Is your connection/download speed subject to any form of contention ratio? In other words, does the speed vary if more users are on line locally?

I'm not familiar with the facilities within this modem/router, nor am I conversant with the DSL system in the U.S. But here in the U.K., most routers will show the maximum theoretical upload and download speeds for your connection, e.g. 8128/448 which is mine. In practice, this actually varies from about 6Mbps down to 3Mbps depending upon time of day, etc.

I appreciete your reply. As far as the above is concerned, I have never had a fluctuating speed problem on my end. That's not to say that some sites my speed varied, but not because of my BW, but because of theirs. I tend to dl binaries from my ISP's news server from time to time. The speed always stays consistant and usually maxes at a little over 3 megs, even tho now it should be around 6 megs but it isn't

Sounds like there's a fundamental difference between your system and ours here in the U.K. If I check DS speed around the middle of the day, it is usually a lot higher than say at 19:00 when everyone's back home and busy checking their e-mails etc. Speed will start to increase again around 24:00 as most folks go to bed.

What about your router. Does it give you maximum theoretical DS and US speeds, together with noise margins and attenuation? If you're that close to your local exchange (or whatever "CO" stands for!), presumably those figures will reflect that. Do they?

When i found this forum I guess I never bothered to check where it might be located. Is this forum mostly based in the UK? I'm in the US. CO stands for Central Office here in the states. Would I be better taking this question to another forum based in the US?

No, my guess would be a majority of the regular posters on this forum are based in the U.S. But there are quite a few of us from other places around the world.

Sorry if my queries and suggestions are not helpful to you...

Windstream Co tech here, The 4200 can do 12meg if it has the new software flash. What part of the USA are you located in? My guess is they have not done the upgrade.
