I cannot receive any attachments properly since November 2013 and I'm going crazy! 1

Hi All,
For several months I have not been able to receive any e-mail attachments, although I can send them! I have been messing about trying to fix this myself with no success, but email is NOT my area of expertise and I am stumped. Whenever I download any e-mail message containing an attachment from my ISP it seem to be reading the attachment as part of the e-mail text and attempting to display it as part of the email itself. NO attachment Icon appears in my inbox, and I get an error message while downloading that particular email - usually something like this

"Could not open the file C:/.../document.pdf for writing." then it says "Cause: Access permission denied. File may be marked as read only or locked (13)"

However, when I go to the email after it is downloaded and open it I see something like this instead of the attachment icon you would normally click on to open the attachment

The computer code part then just goes on for quite a while until the email ends. I have had perfect e-mail service on this machine since 2010 when I purchased it and I have changed nothing to my knowledge since I received my last successful attachment in November 2013. I am running Vista, and using Mailwasher Pro 6.5.4 to spam check and Eudora 7.1.09 in paid mode as my email client software. My ISP can find nothing wrong at their end. File types which have failed to attach so far include .pdf, .docx, .html, .vcf, and .jpg. I know you will probably need more information than this to help me but I am not sure what else to tell you. I will check back tomorrow so please let me know what other information you need to have.

As far as I know I changed nothing in my setup at the time this problem began - I wouldn't have anyway because, as I said I don't really understand email and I would have been afraid of stuffing it up.

1. Check your online mailbox to verify that you can receive and then download the attachments that way. That will prove that Eudora or something on your PC is mucking up the attachments.

2. What is your anti-virus software? Can you disable it for 20 minutes and test again?

3. I suggest you look at the following links to see if it fits your situation. But, I would strongly advise you to get off of Eudora because it is now a dead product. Move to Thunderbird if you don't like/want to pay for Outlook.

On another note, you might want to back up your data folders and then reinstall. When you installed, did you install it "correctly" for Vista/Win 7. See below. From: Link


Windows 7 and Vista don't allow programs to store data files in the location that Eudora 7 wants to use.

Un-install and re-install Eudora. If the installer asks you to Choose Data Folder , select C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\Qualcomm\Eudora . If it doesn't ask you to choose, change the folder before running Eudora for the first time:

1. Right-click the desktop Eudora shortcut.
2. Click Properties .
3. Set the Start in: folder to "C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\Eudora "

I checked my ISP mailbox this morning - so far I haven't got an email with an attachment to check, though I am expecting one (My mother's phone bill, which is sent as a PDF) sometime in the next day or so.

I use AVG free for anti virus

I looked at all the links you provided - there is some interesting material there, but I will need to digest it s bit further. That is something I can't do today as I've got appointments shortly.

I have thought about moving to Thunderbird, but I am very worried about the "look and feel" aspects. I had big trouble when I went from XP to Vista with this computer in 2010, and could only cope by reverting to the Windows Classic "look and feel" which I am still using. I should explain that I have Asperger's Syndrome and any kind of large change is difficult for me to cope with. Also, I have an enormous number of stored emails in Eudora (well over several tens of thousands - pretty much everything I have kept since 2006 when I first went online) and I really don't know how to access any of that material except through Eudora. I still have problems dating from the changeover in 2010 as all of my attachments from before that are no longer linked to the emails they belong with and that is a right pain in the neck at times! That is something I was always meaning to sort out but time has gotten away from me.

I would be very reluctant to re-install, because of the following issue:

Yes I did pay for Eudora (once), but that was back in 2007 or thereabouts. I do have the very fast search - that is why so much of my stuff still lives in Eudora! I don't think anybody in Qualcomm now has much Eudora Knowledge unfortunately.

Thankyou for the link to the newsgroup - I had been having trouble finding any active Eudora discussions, which is why I came on here in the first place. I'll check back here again once I have a new email with attachment to work with and let you know what happens.

Well, I migrated from Outlook Express to Thunderbird in Feb. 2013 and it was pretty painless and my email went back to 1997. All attachments survived (actually attached to the correct emails). If I were you, I'd get off Vista and onto Windows 7 while it's still available because the change when moving to Windows 8 will probably give you a stroke if you thought moving from XP to Vista was a big change!!! I understand about your condition and I sympathize, so not making fun of your reluctance to change as I would some "stubborn for no good reason" poster. That would be me as well.

So, to summarize. If you can't fix the problem, it might be time to upgrade to Windows 7 OR replace the PC with one running Windows 7 thus leaving the old computer functional for you to refer back to. Then switch over to Thunderbird. The way I did it was to install Thunderbird on the OLD PC and get all email imported and the send/receive functioning and then just copy that over to the new PC. As I read about it, it seemed the best way to do it vs. copying data over to the new PC and importing there.

Or kick Windows into touch completely and install Linux Mint or Zorin OS 6 on your machine(s).

At this point, I would you say have nothing to lose and a whole lot to gain from doing so.

Thanks for the advice, both of you. As far as what Chris said, I have been thinking about exploring Linux for some time but I have other major legacy software issues, including a DOS database program with 27 years of business data on it AND an unfortunate long term commitment to Kodak Easyshare (URRGH!) I'm not sure either of those would transition well to Linux of any flavour! I've tried looking for replacements for both these programs for some time and have yet to find anything suitable to replace either one for my particular purposes. I've also got hardware issues with the current computer (hard drive too small, only USB 1 ports that talk V-E-R-Y SLOWLY to my USB 2 2 terabyte external drives, low graphics capabilities etc) I am thinking about a complete upgrade but it would have to be to another secondhand machine as my finances are tight so I'm not sure where to go at the moment.

Now, onto a couple of other points for goombawaho - I've checked at the ISP this morning and my attachment WAS there and I have been able to successfully download it via Firefox, so that will at least give me a temporary, if irritating, work around. I've also checked my user data location and it is "C:\Users\User_2\AppData\Roaming\Qualcomm\\" so I think that should be correct, from what you have said above.

I'd like to thank you both for your help. I find this to be a great board - i wish sometimes I had more time to look around here rather than just popping up when a problem rears itself! If either of you have any bright ideas, please let me know - I've got this thread on email forwarding so I will see any new replies you make.

I'd give you this nice second-hand desktop that I have, but it's not permissible. Maybe T-T needs a Craig's List type of buy/sell/donate page.

If you have to keep that computer for a while, I would do the following:
1. Keep using webmail for attachments (problem solved)
OR
2. Copy your Eudora folder to external media. Uninstall Eudora. Run CCleaner and clean out temp files and clean out registry. Reboot. Reinstall Eudora. Set up all accounts. Test send/receive. Copy data directory over the top of the clean installation from your backup to restore email.


If you think you will upgrade:
Keep using webmail for attachments until the upgrade happens.

Hi All,
I've popped back in to let you know my problem is fixed, thanks to some very nice people at the comp.mail.eudora.ms-windows news group. It turns out that my attachment directory path had somehow been changed to an old XP path within Eudora, even though the correct data file was showing on opening the application. It is a complete mystery how that happened, given that I am the only person who ever touches my machine - at least I think so, given that my cat can't type!

Anyway I've changed it to the proper path, learned a bit more about how Eudora works, and cleared up at least one of the murkier corners of my system.

As far as abandoning Eudora goes, I think I'll continue to stick for the moment - the newsgroup seem to be active enough to keep me supported for the foreseeable future, and, after all, this IS the first problem I've had in more than 15 years - I wish I could get my hardware to last that long!
