This is my first attempt with SBS, please help!!!

I have tried using the connectcomputer wizard to do this but I am getting an error response telling me that there were errors setting the networking settings.

I have tried the old fashioned way via My Computer and I get "The following error occurred attempting to join the domain : The RPC server is unavailable"

I have checked the services and RPC is running it is set to automatic.

There is no problem with my connections or TCP/IP I can ping all around my network from machine to server and from server to machine.

Such problems are usually DNS related. Verify that the workstations are using DHCP for their IP assignments. Then verify the DNS & DHCP settings on the server.

DNS Settings

Set all static NIC TCP/IP properties to only list internal DNS servers.

In DHCP set the DNS setting to internal DNS servers.

In DNS, configure ISP DNS on the forwarders tab.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

Mark, thanks for the reply..

All my clients are set to receive IP details automatically.

I have checked all the above and all correct.

I am still getting the same error though... this wall is starting to hurt my head!!!!! ouch ouch ouch!!!!!

Regards,

Richard.

The computers are all XP and all members of a workgroup right? Not members of some missing domain?

What errors are recorded on both local machine and server event logs?

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

Mark,

On the local machine there are no errors reported in error logs.

On the server there are the following

Thanks for the speedy reply.

Sharepoint is used for the connectcomputer wizard and the fact that you have

Make sure all your SQL services\instances are running in the Services control panel list. You may need to go into the Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Small Business Server 2003 to remove and re-add certain components of SBS if they aren't functioning properly. You didn't exclude SharePoint install during setup, did you? If you had, I don't think you would have gotten the message above.
