My computer dual boots into XP and 98. It has been working fine that way for several months. The other day it simply lost the internet connection in XP only! I have tried to ipconfig renew and release it, but to no avail.
I have even reinstalled XP. When I go to the repair tool, it simply says that it cannot connect to the DHCP. I have worked on this for hours!
Can anyone help?
Thanks

People, I am so sorry for the misunderstanding! I should have said that it is a Linksys ROUTER and a RCA cable MODEM.

All computers involved are connected by the router.

All the cables are working fine.

Each computer have cards installed.

We are NOT using the ICS.

We're getting ready to try the suggested idea about changing the IP's manually instead of using the DHCP. I'll let you know in a minute. :)

It didn't work. :(
Does it sound like a bad network card to you?
It does to my husband.
It is sending packets, but is not receiving any.
The problem computer does not SEE any other computers in the Network neighborhood in either 98 or XP. But, the internet still works on 98 only.
Let me know if you wonderful people believe it to be a network card problem or not.
Thanks!

ok, let's not mix things up.

IF the PC can access the internet in Win98, the NIC is ok.
Not being able to access other PC's something else.
Boot in WIN98, note down the IP address, DNS and Default Gateway you get (we asked that before).

Boot again in XP, goto the network settings of the LAN adapter, click the Support Tab and read the IP address.
If it is NOT 192.168.1 .. Then click the Repair button and see if it gives you a 192.168.1.x address, if it does, then that part is ok, it should be the same as you get in WIN98.

Over to you

OK, step by step: On the dual booting computer
IP in Win. 98 is 192.168.102
DNS: 24.159.64
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

IP is XP:
169.254.92.57
When we hit the "Repair" button, the screen went blue and went to "beginning dump of physical memory." After going through a small time, the computer restarted itself.

We even tried installing a new network card just to see. You're right, it wasn't the card. But what is it????

Hmm, the fact it pops up a blue screen during a network repair does not sound to good.
Go into the Xp, remove the network adapter through control panel - system - device manager.
Also remove any reference to the network and reboot.
It will pick it up again and repair at least the networking part. Then try again as above.
If this does not work or still crash, if there is nothing on the XP yet, I would at this point suggest to reinstall the XP on that PC. There defentively something wrong with it and it does not seem to be the hardware. The solution is out there. [morning]

We have tried reinstalling XP, changing the network card, adding and removing the network neighborhood, and a few other thousand things.
So, my husband has now formatted both his hard drives and is starting all over from scratch.
Win. 98 is now able to access the internet.
XP will be the next job on the list.
Thank you so much for your help!
We'll let you know how this turns out.
Thanks again!
Kristi

Good morning! My husband's computer is now working fine! Of course, he DID have to format BOTH drives and start all over again, but he is able to access the internet with both now.
He formatted the other drive because he was getting a lot of illegal operations on the C: drive.
Well, God bless you all and have a great day!
Kristi
ps. He's wanting me to set mine up with dual boot system now. I may be seeing you soon. :)

Oh boy ... we'll be here , haha The solution is out there. [morning]
