Im having problems sending Email... Im using Windows 2003 Server and Using Exchange 2003... I have a D-Link 614+ Router and have allowed All Virtual Servers Including POP and SMTP along with http and FTP... And they are pointing to my server IP address... Ive sent test emails from an outside email address and my email account will get the emails just fine my problem is sending the email... I have set up my MX record for my domain name dont know if i need the A record set as well... The funny thing is i used to be able to send Email just fine before we had power outages due to a storm after the storm i can only get email but not send... I reinstalled Exchange and installed it from the instructions it provides and used internet mail wizard to set up the accounts like i did before but dont know if im missing a step or if maybe my firewall/router is bad on me any suggestions would be great Thanks

Check the DNS from your mailserver, drop to a command prompt

>nslookup
>set type=mx
>hotmail.com

Does your mailserver report back the MX records for hotmail (about 16 of them)

If not you should troubleshoot your DNS setup.

ok I did a nslookup and it says
Non-Authoritive Answer:
my domain.com MX preference = 1 mail exchanger = then my external IP address...
I ran this from an offsite system as well do i need to be on my system?

Sorry.. I meant do a nslookup against hotmail, as you are having problems sending. I'm sure your MX record is correct if you are receiving email.

Ah ok I can try im not at my computer right now but i will try it later today and let you know... Thanks

ok I preformed an nslookup against hotmail and it gave me several IP addresses... ex
mx1.hotmail.com internet address 64.4.50.99 it gave me a whole list of those... i preformed this from my server and noticed that it is coming from
server: localhost
address: 127.0.0.1
do i need to try it from a client on my server or did i do it right by running it from my server and if thats the case could that 127.0.0.1 be why it isnt sending properly??
Thank you

That could be my answer to my problems... I did have to reinstall Win2k3 Server due to power problems from storms wrecked havoc on my system and i know i had email send out before im wondering if the windows based firewall is turned on automatically and i had it off before therefore blocking emails sent out from my pc....i didnt think of it but since im away from my server i will check it out later and let you know... Thanks

Im not sure where it goes or how to check the mail queue im new to exchange... i do know it goes to the sent items Folder like it send but it never shows up at the address im sending it too... And i know the address will accept it because ive sent stuff previously when it did work before all the problems began

If your client machines are sending mail internally we will assume their DNS settings are correct, the fact the from the server you can retrieve the mx records for hotmail allow us to assume the Server DNS is also correct.
You should now start looking at the event logs on the exchange servers to see if anything stands out.

To view the queues

ESM\Administrative Groups\First Adminstrative Groups\Servers\yourserver\queue

Have you set up ure connectors ????
I had same problem and it was the above

I haven't failed, I've found 10,000 ways that don't work.

I dont know... Im going to check the log and i can check my connectors... I thought i set up exchange the exact same way i did before and used the script program that is with exchange to set up recieve and send emails... Im not at that computer now but can check it later

ok on my event log i do get a MSExchangeAL and an MsExchange DSACCESS error messages in my event viewer didnt see anything in my queue log what does this mean?? im starting to think to start from scratch and also look at the possibility of disabling my firewall on my router and see if that helps any
