Are you talking about "Microsoft File Transfer Manager" when you mention "down loader"?

If that is causing problems you might try uninstalling it from Control Panel/ Programs and Features.

System Restore is an option you may like to consider? Do you have a download exe of Office that you could first save to CD?

You could look around using this command at a Command Prompt.

C:\Windows\system32>assoc /?
Displays or modifies file extension associations

ASSOC [.ext[=[fileType]]]

.ext Specifies the file extension to associate the file type with
fileType Specifies the file type to associate with the file extension

Type ASSOC without parameters to display the current file associations.
If ASSOC is invoked with just a file extension, it displays the current
file association for that file extension. Specify nothing for the file
type and the command will delete the association for the file extension.

C:\Windows\system32>assoc .exe
.exe=exefile

See if you have "exefile" associated with .exe?

If you don't you could try and change it.

ok this is still going to be a outstanding issue, as i have damaged vista twice and i have had no solution where ever i look thanks linnney for your help!!! Ill post a email to the microsoft bench to see if they will respond to this problem!! I cannot run: .com /.exe files progs once i have assoc a .exe file to explorer.. as i cannot find away to revert my mistake.... I needed to have a look at 2007 office before i go to a conference at end of next month bristol UK!! so i have re-installed the O/S and run the down load after rebuild.. i found that the down load was a Zip .exe extension so it extracted to temp folder before running the setup!!

unresolved!!
