I am trying my first win2000 server installation, 11 desktop pc`s with windows xp pro or home, they will all want access to the cd rom on the server, and a central shared area on the server. Also internet and e-mail access, although this is not essential at the moment. Please can someone tell me the best way to set this up from initial install of win 2000 server. Your help is greatly appreciated

Thanks

Chris

If you've ever installed Windows, it is a breeze. To share the CD, right click the CD in My Computer and choose share. New share called CD. Share to everyone.

On data disk, Create folder called Data. Share that to domain users. Set as full control.

Done.

Thanks

I know these bits....its when it asks me to set up active directory etc. I want to be able to assign user rights etc for the 10 users etc. Should I have also installed terminal services, it looks like I shouldnt have!

I think I need some serious hand holding to set up this server! all help is appreciated

thanks

Chris

You don't need AD. Leave that bit alone. You also don't need terminal server.

Thanks

So I take it that I can uninstall terminal services from add/remove progs, and how do I set up users without ad?

Thanks in anticipation!

Chris

yes, uninstall terminal services.

In local users and groups create the users then have clients use client for ms networks. Never actually tried it like that, but you never know until you try it...

I will set it up this way...as in peer to peer...ish. What would you say was the best way to set up from scratch, and I would be glad to pay for thr info?

Thanks
