I am actually thinking of setting up mail on my Apache server and was wondering if anyone has any pointers on where to start. I am already using php (if that’s any help). thanks.

To err is human, to completely mess up takes a computer. [morning]

Have you found an SMTP module for Apache? I know there is a POP3 module, but due to the nature of SMTP, I didn't think any modules for it would be available.

CORRECTION:
Replace the word "main" with the word "mail" in my last post.

I think your best interpretation of my answer and danielhozac's is that this has little, if anything, to do with Apache. It's not like Apache is your operating system or anything.

There's a POP3 module for Apache? Why?

Well, why not? Apache's interface for handling other protocols than HTTP makes writing a server for a new protocol a breeze, Apache internally handles all the "hard stuff".
I think the POP3 module was written just to prove this point, but it is indeed usable.

First, please forgive me if I have the wrong forum. Second I haven’t got a clue how mail works on a server. So here is what I want to do. I want to set up a mail server (I think) so that I can have my own personal email address/addresses, then when somebody emails me from my web site it gets stored in my email box/folder on my machine or if an email is sent to me from yahoo/hotmail etc it can be sent to my machine/domain. If this question is on the wrong forum please let me know and I will move it appropriately.

You can get the James Mail server from the Apache website.
I installed it but didn't get it working yet, not that I tried too hard anyway. It's a Java server which runs as a service on your PC.

You could try Argosofth ttp://they also hav a FTP server if you are interested.

actually there's many many options if you do a quick search on Google. as usual the best ones will cost money.
