I administrate a small Windows 2000 network with three W2K servers (one being a domain controller and another being the primary DNS). Beginning two days ago, the DNS server stopped being able to browse the network. The System event log showed the following entry:
Source: NETLOGON Event ID: 5719
No Windows NT or Windows 2000 Domain Controller is available for domain sacred-heart.org. The following error occurred: Not enough storage is available to process this command.
A reboot fixed it for about ten hours. About twelve hours after that the DNS server needed yet another reboot.
I also found these troubling entries in the DNS event log:
Source: DNS Event ID: 140
The DNS server could not initialize the remote procedure call (RPC) service. If it is not running, start the RPC service or reboot the computer. The event data is the error code.
Source: DNS Event ID: 404
The DNS server could not bind a Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) socket to address 0.0.0.0. The event data is the error code. An IP address of 0.0.0.0 can indicate a valid "any address" configuration in which all configured IP addresses on the computer are available for
use. Restart the DNS server or reboot the computer.
Source: DNS Event ID: 408
The DNS server could not open socket for address 0.0.0.0.
Verify that this is a valid IP address for the server computer. If it is NOT valid use the Interfaces dialog under Server Properties in the DNS Manager to remove it from the list of IP interfaces. Then stop and restart the DNS server. (If this was the only IP interface on this
machine and the DNS server may not have started as a result of this error. In that case remove the DNS\Parmeters\ ListenAddress value in the services section of the registry and restart.)
If this is a valid IP address for this machine, make sure that no other application (e.g. another DNS server) is running that would attempt to use the DNS port.
This last one has shown up several times. I can't browse the network, or even do DNS look ups, though the other two servers on the network have no problems seeing it, and the domain controller shows not unusual activity.
