I've been trying to connect to my Partner Messaging R1 RS232 port forever now to change the IP of the unit before I upgrade to R6 or 7. Here's my issue. I have created the 355a adapter and assume it works, here's why. Though I can't type anything logical on the screen, during a reboot of the switch, I see all messages just fine.

I'm using XP Pro's Hyperterminal with most defaults. The forum indicated that I should set the port speed to 38400 8n1n, but that won't work for me, I steped down to 19200 8n1n and that's when I can read the screen fine upon reboot. Otherwise, any character I type shows up incorrectly, like the Enter key is the "Y" key, and the P key it seems is the enter key, but not all keys are there. I'm confused on this one, any one out there experienced the same? any fix?

My adapter is basedon TTT's pinout, which seems to be the only one that worked for me of all the different ones listed inthe forums.

Additionally, I try to connect from a station phone and dial the modem, but that won't answer. Actually I hear the tones, but can't establish a connection either from the Admin tools, or Hyperterminal. I'm just trying to change the IP, why does it have to be so difficult?

Hi JPBInfonect,
You must connect directly to the RS-232 port on the mail unit, I have not been able to connect to the internal modem but I haven't tried very hard either. If you can see the boot up messages, it stands to reason that this should work. I use a real 355 adapter with no problems. You might want to have a closer look at the one you made. Remote Admin is for the processor, not the mail.
Generally, this is an easy proceedure that I've performed many times. I use Win98, WinNT4.0 and XP (both flavours) without a problem. I use the settings you have listed above (they are correct).

I don't have pin 6 to pin 8. Though it may help to know that I made an rj45 to 9 pin adapter. Here are te Pinouts I used.
RJ45 listed 1st > 9Pin Serial
1 > 9
2 > 8 tied to 6 tied to 1
3 > 4
4 > 5
5 > 2
6 > 3
7 & 8 not used

Hope this helps,
I hate to spend 40 or 50 bucks to find that I have a bad RS232, wel heck, hate to spend 40 or 50 on a 2.99 part! It does screem of a bad pinout though, specifically on the transmit side, though I've tried everything I can think of.

Thanks thus far guys.
Jeff
