hyperlink question 1

Hi, whenever I use the properties bar in dreamweaver to create a hyperlink (click the little yellow folder next to the Link bar and browse to find the folder...) it shows up as ../page.htm in the code.

Somebody just told me that the two dots and the slash before the page name are preventing ppl. from seeing the page on the internet. Is there a setting in dreamweaver to stop it from putting in the ../ and just have it put "page.htm"? Thanks in advance.

what that means is that the file you are linking to down up one directory from where your page is saved.

lets say below is a file structure of your site

linked to page ----- [new folder] page doing the linking---

so you would have to have the pages in the same directory to get rid of ../

Thank you for your reply. Question: Do you know what ppl. do if they don't have everything in one directory?? How can I possibly put an entire site in one directory? It would be so unorganized! Any suggestions about organizing a site in one directory? Thanks!

you dont, for organization your break elements into different folders

[layout images]
[site images]
[product images]
I also break down any major section into its own folder.

but the main pages, Home, contact, about, etc. i keep in 1 directory.

obviously the images will be in a separate directory than the pages. But I sometimes have certain pages in a separate directory. Like if I have 20 pages on a topic called &quot;health&quot; I will make a separate folder in the pages directory called health.

Is the only option then to write out the full path of the url for each link when linking between folders? is that what you do? thanks.

well in that folder you can have the first page called index or default then make the link

http://www.mysite.com/health

that will tell the server to point to the default page

If you are using DW to do the linking, then it will put in the correct path for you.
The &quot;Organisation&quot; that deecee spoke of is for us mere mortals! The software doesn't really give a damn where the page is..as long as it's in the directory that you specify when you define the site!

Personally I keep most of my pages at the top of the root directory.. and have things like images, buttons and other extras in separate files. Mind you..my sites are pretty linear.. I don't tend to go further than a few pages from the index.htm.. let alone 20! lol

Deecee, I'm not sure what you mean by making the first age in the folder called index...

If your domain is

http://www.flasher.org

(though I bet that one's already taken by a certain sort of site!), and someone types that into their browser it will look for your index page... the home page...ie &quot;

http://www.flasher.org/index.htm&quot;

or /home or / default etc .. whatever you've called it.

This page MUST be in the top level of your directory.. not a subfolder.

Personally, I always call my &quot;Home&quot; pages index.htm ...

I use hierarchal folders for most of my sites and have never had any issues. The Intranet I do most of my work on has up 10 leveles of folders to keep things in an orderly fashion, then again there are over 2500 htm/asp files to keep a track of. So I have multiple index.htm files all within their own folders.
