Hyper terminal -- Accessing Serial port on Win 2K

I am using Windows 2000 Prof.

I need to access Netgear router through the serial port cable to send a file to the router.

The problem is that I do not know how to set up serial port terminal on Windows. I played with hyper terminal but nothing.

Hyper terminal is the way to go. Configure it to use Com1, 9600 baud and the rest as default. When you say you tried HT and got nothing, what did you set the connections as? What does Netgear specify as the connection settings? Are you using the Null Modem cable (serial to serial) or the Serial to RJ-45 cable?

Configuration is as per Netgear 314 manual.
Com1, 9600 baud and Flow Control = None.
Using (serial to serial) cable (male/female connector of small widths)

Hyperterminal gets connected, but I cannot type any character.

Have you tried, while connected to the Netgear, Reboot it. Often, if you are truly connected, when a machine reboots you will see its power on self test. Hyperterminal may say you are connected, but you might not be. You can run the Hyperterminal withouteven having a cable plugged in and it will say you are connected....

Thanks for the assistance.

For rebooting Netgear, I unplugged/plugged the power supply to Netgear router while being connected with ZERO results.

I guess the hyperterminal never got connected even though it says "Connected". I cannot type even a single character on the HT screen.

Looks that something is missing.

Take cable out of the netgear.
Short pin 2 and 3 of the cable end (with a screwdriver) while typing on your keyboard. If characters are displayed, then your serial port is fonctionning correctly and hyperterminal as well, and you know you're on the right port.
3 possibilities left: Reversed TX/RX (null modem), or bad parameters (speed, parity) or problem with the netgear router.

A dlink router runs for 50$US and can be configured/upgraded via the webpage if needed.... I just love those little animals.
