I'm using Illustrator 7 with a G4, and 1 Gig of RAM. I'm designing a campus map with 36 buildings, roads, paths, trees, etc. The file is 110 MB and responds SO SLOWLY!!! to any changes... what can I do to speed things up?

Thanks!

Hmmmm. Maybe try this.

Go to your Actions palette and perform the action Delete Unused Palette Items.

Then do a Save as to create a new copy of your document.

How's the size of the new document after doing that?

While in Finder - and WITHOUT Ill launched - click one on the Illustrator application in the Illustator folder. Go to Get Info on File menu. Under Memory assign a LOT more minimum and preferred. I still have ILL 9 on my machine, although I use CS. ILL 9 is set to use 88 megs of ram min. and 96 megs preferred. Preferred must be the same or higher value than minimum.

Link your images instead of imbedding them. On the file viewer when you pick your image check off the link option, and keep it as an AI file until your finished. If you save it as an eps it will imbed the images. If you have a 110MB file of just vectors you got mad points and it most likely wouldn’t print on any postscript printer or rip without nuff postscript errors… lol stackoverflow (#$*(·‹ˆÍÏÎ....

cheers

If you have the option to save Illustrator files with PDF compatability... turn it off. It bloats the file sizes alot.

That said, I don't think you have that option in Illustrator 7 anyway. My guess would be to link the images as ChokingMyTrap said.

Version 7, I believe had linking.. Now that I think if it linking was default when placing images in 7 & 8.. been a while since iv used 7.

PDF Compatability within an AI files I dont think came in until Illustrator 10.

Anothing thing you could do if the machine is really chugging, apple+y and switch back and forth from outlines view. If your really hurting that is :p
