I understand it is not best practice to put Exchange 2007 onto a DC but are there any adverse effects to putting the hub transport role onto a DC?

Should be fine as it is a role you can remove quite easily. Can't you virtualise a Windows instance on the DC and put HT on that?

But would that have any support implications if you were to contact Microsoft with any problems? And would you recommend vmware or microsoft virtual server?

Microsoft will support Exchange on a DC. They just don't recommend it for a whole slew of valid reasons.

Microsoft supports Exchange on virtualization platforms as well, although it's "best effort" support for non-Microsoft technologies. It's not recommended to virtualize the mailbox role, or the DC holding the PDC emulator FSMO role.

Sorry to be pedantic but what your saying is you can virtualise the HT and/or mailbox role on a DC (preferrably not the DC holding the PDC emulator) but it's not recommended.
It's just that I inherited a HT on a DC and my official Microsoft trainer said not to put Exchange on a DC if you can help it

That's correct. It *IS* supported, but not recommended. Create a virtual guest that's not a DC and move the HT role to that.

It isn't recommended and there is a gotcha with 2008 so highly recommend avoiding it.
