Hub & Router Internet Issues

OK, here's my setup:

Internet
^
Router < 2 Computers (with internet access)
^
Hub < 3rd Computer (without internet access)

I just got a cable modem for internet. I had the three computers on a network through a hub to share files, printer and dial-up internet access through proxy server on 1 unit. However with cable internet I was told I needed a router instead and that the router would assign IP addresses automatically. When I connected all 3 units into the router, two computers worked great but the third lit up the 100baseT light on the router and would not see the other 2 units. The only way I could get the 3rd computer to see the router was through a hub (diagram above). It will share files and printers with the other 2 units but will not access the internet. When I configure the 3rd computer to assign an IP address automatically the router won't give it one that resembles the other 2.

Any suggestions, need more info?

check your TCP/IP and network settings and make sure the dns server addresses and ip addresses are not hard coded. (disable dns)

click start, run, type winipcfg (enter)

I'm making a guess that the point on the router that connects to the hub is a &quot;crossed over&quot; connection that is meant to connect to a hub and not for pluggin in a computer.

What router have you got? I have a Solwise SAR715 which meant I could remove my hub and still have my 3 Pc's connect to the internet.
I found the router and the hub didn't like working together, it appeared to be something to do with the cross-over port on the router. I removed the hub and everything was fine, I don't use the cross-over port at all now.
I would try assigning each PC with it's own static IP, say starting at 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.3 then adding the router as the gateway IP on each of the PC's.

To smah - I inadvertantly posted the same message twice. Therefore the same thread. Sorry.

To bike1100 - I have a Siemens ss2604 model router. The port that the hub is in has an uplink switch for crossover. When the hub is connected I have to switch that port to crossover (the only way that PC sees the others & no internet), when I try to connect the computer direct I switch out of crossover mode (the PC does not connect).

This is crazy but with the 3rd PC going through the hub, I get it to see the internet by looking at my PC as a proxy server (Winproxy) but with only about 650 kbs rate as apposed to around 2600 kbs.

I'm still looking into the cabeling. I think the cable in the walls are crossover and when I use a regular patch from the wall to the PC, it jambs.

Sorry, neither my friend or I have had any dealings with that router.
My SAR715 is a 4 port, actually has 5 ports, but, if I use the crossover port I cannot use port 1, I don't use my crossover port because of that. Is yours the same? try using the other ports, you say you have 3 PC's so I presume the remaining 3 ports (if you have a total of 4 including the crossover) will be enough with normal cables (not crossover).
Thats how I use mine, my forth port is for my Dlink Print Server, which you apparently have built into your router.

OK here's the latest. My wall socket was crossed, I reconnected straight through. Plugged the problem PC direct into the router, reset and configured to assign an address automatically. The 100baseT light still lights up but the router gave the PC an IP address 192.168.254.4 the other 2 PC's are 192.168.254.2 and .3. The subnet and gateway addresses are correct also. However, the PC still won't see the cable modem or the other PC's.

I can ping the router with the 2 connected PC's but the problem PC won't ping.

It's a real head scratcher.

Any suggestions?

Ok, does the problem pc have any firewall software running? - Norton, McAfee, Zonealarm, XP's firewall?

I think we must still be missing something. The problem machine is now getting a correct IP address, but still has essentially no connectivity. This shouldn't affect ping, but is Client for MS Networks installed on that machine?

Can you ping that machine (by ip address) from one of the working machines? Have you reset the router since making the cabling changes - probably won't make any difference, but wouldn't hurt.

One more thing from your other post - don't worry about the router connection lights staying on. The dual boot machine that I'm on right now will cause my router lights to stay on if I shut down from linux, but they go out when shutting down from xp. It's no big deal - it has something to do with the power management, hardware and the ability of some NIC's to be able to power on the PC. It's because there is still power to the NIC after you shut down. After shutting down, if you pull the power cable from the pc (or the wall) you will see the router lights go out also.

OK this is getting really weird. I may be ready to just go out and purchase all new PC's.

All 3 units have Client for MS Networks installed. Now here's the wacky part. The PC I am on now is one of the connected units. I can ping the other connected unit and the router but he cannot ping my address and does ping the router. Neither of the 2 connected units will ping the problem PC.
