OK, here's my setup:

Internet
^
Router < 2 Computers (with internet access)
^
Hub < 3rd Computer (without internet access)

I just got a cable modem for internet. I had the three computers on a network through a hub to share files, printer and dial-up internet access through proxy server on 1 unit. However with cable internet I was told I needed a router instead and that the router would assign IP addresses automatically. When I connected all 3 units into the router, two computers worked great but the third lit up the 100baseT light on the router and would not see the other 2 units. The only way I could get the 3rd computer to see the router was through a hub (diagram above). It will share files and printers with the other 2 units but will not access the internet. When I configure the 3rd computer to assign an IP address automatically the router won't give it one that resembles the other 2.

Any suggestions, need more info?

I need help.
Thanks

as a thought, if you turn the Network card down to 10 Mbps you may not need the hub. I am not sure why it is not working with a DHCP server but you could assign it an address in the same subnet but outside the DHCP range. What Router? I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Thanks for the quick response. The NIC is an internal card, I do have another card but how do I turn the NIC down to 10Mbps? It's a Siemens 4 port speedstream router.

I tried to manually assign that computer an address but it still wouldn't see the other 2 units. The IP address ranges are 192.168.254.0 to 192.168.254.254 the latter being the router address itself. What number would you suggest to be outside the range? Or am I asking the correct question.

As you can see I know just enough to get into big trouble.

Thanks so much again for your help.

What ports are you using to connect the router & hub and what type of cable are you using. If using a straight throug cable, make sure you're using the uplink port on 1 of the devices.

I just reread your post - if the router has a built in multi-port switch, you shouldn't need the hub. What's happening directly & then again with the hub makes me wonder - Have you checked the cable to that machine?

How do I tell what type of cable is run? The router has an an uplink port designated on the first port with a manual switch (button) to switch to uplink. The hub is in that port now and swithced to uplink. I will check the specs for built-in multi port switch.

A normal patch cable will have the same wire color configuration at both ends. Swap the cable with another machine - what happens?

It's not a proxy server. One of the other 2 units that are running was a proxy server but I have all proxy settings disabled. Was running Winproxy.

It will take some doing to use another cable as they are run through the walls. I will try that and get back to you guys.

Thanks again

might be the manual, you did not give a model number, if so page 19 of 44 discusses how to not include every address in the subnet in DHCP. if your router is 192.168.254.254, you could make 192.168.254.1 to 192.168.254.249 the DHCP range and make the troublesome PC 192.168.254.250 this leaves .251-.253 for other troublesome devices, while still allowing 249 carefree devices I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.
