If the site's DNS host has defined and whatever.com to be the same IP address, either one works. If not, then you need the www. to make it work.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Thanks to you both.. you have NO idea how hard it was to find an answer to that. Try doing a web search on url, url protocol, web address, etc... errrrr.

It rely depends on the webmaster, weather they want to capture all the traffic, i.e. the people who don't use well as those that do.

The actually a subdomain of the main domain name, and can be anything the webmaster wants, of course everyone uses the main subdomain, it has become the norm. (Maybe when the internet first started to form, it was set as a standard)

What has become a common mis-understanding is that the the computer that it needs to look on the world wide web. For more info on this subject lookup schema and TDL (Top Level Domain) and maybe subdomains as well.
 
Great post! Will do some more reading myself as the whole TLD thing is a little bit of a grey area for me :)
