I have a VMware server running in China and I have lost my http access to it due to an http error 500
Reboot doesn't help and the box will not accept my telnet login to my userid

Has anyone seen this before? And how do I get access to that box again?

Except to board a plane for China I am running out of options (and I don't want to go there if I can help it)

con you get in with ssh? telnet is disabled by default.

Error 500 is from the web server, i.e. apache (http) server.. you should issue [tt]/etc/init.d/httpd restart[/tt] and take a look.

cheers.

My problem is that I can't even get remote access to the server using telnet

What we have tried several times is to reboot the server, but this doesn't change anything

how can you reboot the box with no access?

Ok, 1[sup]st[/sup] thing is to get access to the service console. Again, telnet is closed by default, you should get access through ssh, not telnet.

when you get in, you should see the log files in order to know what's going on.

I just asked one of the users in China to turn it off and then on again after I had shut down the guest operating systems.

You have the option of using an application like "PuTTY" and ultize SSH connection to the box and then control the console remotely with that. Very small foot print. ("PuTTY" is a freeware telnet type client downloadable from OR you can just Google "putty" (no quotes) and it will come up for you.

Otherwise I'd say get your chop sticks ready.

Did you try PuTTY? Did it help?... I am especially interested on your result because I have one of my ESX (2.5) servers that does not want to allow the http service to run. All of my other servers have been maintained in the exact same fashion as this one, no different changes, yet even after the start command the http service wil not run.

I can start a new thread on this subject, but it looked like we were barking up the same tree.

Thoughts.... from johnny99 or anyone?

johnny99,

How did this turn out for you? Did PuTTY help? I am especially interested because I have one server (among many) that have all been maintained in the exact same fashion, yet this one server the MUI will not function (i.e. the http service will not run or restart). It used to work, but just stopped out of the blue. I have rebooted (like you did) and manually tried to restart from Linux console.

I can start a new thread if you think I should,
Thoughts from johnny99 or anyone else?

I didn't have the time to try PuTTY, but I don't expect it to be different then using normal telnet.
It wasn't me who installed the server, so the server is running with HIGH security setting and no other users then the built-in users.
So the only user I have is root, and the server will not allow me to login to the box using telnet and root.

The funny thing is that VirtualCenter can manage the server, but not all the things I can du using http.

PuTTY is also an SSH client. ESX will not accept telnet only ssh on port 22.

Yeah, SSH was what I was trying to explain. Being as you'll be dealing with the distance long term, try it later when the heat's off.

I hadn't thought of a security/user issue. Regaring my issue I supose I will start a new thread, because I can not get the http service to run on my one server.

Thanks , g'day

The funny thing is that VirtualCenter can manage the server, but not all the things I can du using http.

VirtualCenter is a client/server program, it not use ssh nor telnet nor http. It uses an agent (the vmware.agent program, you should installed it in the ESX server) and the VirtualCenter that it is installed as Server and it uses the port 902 in order to make the communication between VC and the ESX Servers.

I had a trouble with the http server with an old 2.1 ESX and I had to reset the vmare-auth service.

Cheers.
