Hi All,

I have two HSRP enabled routers (RTA and RTB) configured with serial tracking. Default decrement value is 10. RTA has a priority of 115 and RTb has a priority of 100. My question is, what will happen if serial link of RTA goes down?

Would HSRP decrement a 2nd time since RTA would still be the Active router after the first decrement of 10.

Thanks

If RTB is set to preempt, then it will take over. Also, post your questions in the Cisco routers forum, not here.

Preemption won't work unless the RTB priority is higher than RTA AFTER RTA drops priority. With your scenario, RTA would drop priority but still be the active router. The increment you define must lower the priority below what RTB has AND you must configure RTB to preempt.

So for this scenario, this means that HSRP will only decrement once for RTA and RTA will still be the active router.

preempt and tracking are configured on both routers.

Thanks.

Are you guys speaking CCNP? Don't make me break out the CCNP certification library I just got in! lol

Actually ordered the whole set (older series) for $12 off of eBay... Will still have to buy the new books but could not pass it up!

That's awesome.. Some of you guys have forgotten more about networking than most people know.. LoL

maczen, suddenly I'm reminded of one of my favorite Married With Children episodes. The one where Kelly goes on the game show, and Al is filling her head with sports knowledge to the point she starts forgetting things like her name.

But sadly, what I've been finding lately, is that if you don't use it you lose it. Co-worker and I were just talking the other day about some Novell stuff that we used to just know instantly, but now can barely remember how to spell Netware.

I remember building acls in Cisco routers in the Network Academy classes, taking the summer off, and coming back to the routers and I was like..."config what? ip nat what?"

Burt,

PLEASE don't remind me - Fall semester just started today and I have got newbies all over the place :) I need some anti-newbie spray :)

But luck is on my side as we had 2 Cisco Academy classes that went all summer sooo they only had 5 days off to forget it all :)

I try to play around with the lab at least once a week... Once I get started I generally stay on it for hours (Sometimes too many hours!!!) LoL

But that is a good point.. Maybe I should stay on the Cisco track since the Juniper will pull me from Cisco and I will not be pursuing more Juniper certs any time soon beyond JNCIA
