HSRP and Standby router

I have no experience with HSRP.

I can telnet into the ethernet interface of the router shown in the partial config below and look at the config.

When I telnet into the standby router, I see the exact same config down.

When I do a "sh int", both routers have the same mac address.

Since both routers cannot have the same mac address, I am obviously connected to the same router using both the primary and standby router addresses.

There are several sites configured with two routers at each site using HSRP and I am getting the same results.

What is the deal?

Sounds like your telnetting into the same router. That router may be the "active" HSRP router, so if you telnet to the physical address and the HSRP address, you end up in the same router.

A basic HSRP has a three IP set up;

Router 1 = x.x.x.1
Router 2 = x.x.x.2
Standby ip = x.x.x.3

so if router 1 is the "active" the telnetting into .1 or .3 will get you to the same box. If Router 1 fails, that Router 2 becomes "active" and you can use the .3 to telnet to that box.

If you want to get to the second router, you must use the physical interface IP, and if you still can't reach it than your router may have fail and you need to take a trip.
