Email welcome if you're in a hurry or something -- but post in tek-tips as well please, and I will post my reply here as well.

I haven't worked with HP_UX at all. My guess is that the IPL (initial program loader) has become corrupted (bad magic). The file systems that reside on the disk are OK and thus booting from alternate media and fsck'ing/mounting them works fine. I wonder if HP_UX supports rewriting the boot blocks to a drive? It could also be a corrupt kernel. Have you attempted to boot from alternate kernels?

Hi Larry,

It sounds like the binary file that points to the hpux kernel is damaged or missing.

If you have a HPUX System OS CD for your version of HP-UX
and know the hardware path of your CDROM drive, can boot off
the CD and choose the option that will allow to restore a LIF file under recover a system.

The following URL should point to the HP technical forum database information to search for the expert advice.

Good Luck
John H.
