HP4300C Scanjet Installation Problem

I have been trying to install a new HP4300C on to my Compaq Presario 5170, with the scanjet hook up via USB. If I install the HP Software first, then run the hppsapp.exe program, it opens up fine but says that it cannot find any scanner (as I would expect). When I then plug the scanner into my USB port, the PC does the usual auto-detect and loads the drivers up. When I then thry and run the hppsapp.exe I get an invalid page fault in either the kernel32.dll or hpgdtt.dll (depending on how it feels!!). I have tried de-installing the software and scanner then re-installing but without success. I've checked the HP site and followed a few sets of instructions they suggest for getting around these but no joy.

Has anyone got any ideas that I might try ??

Thanks

It looks to me like you've done everything correctly! Unless your OS itself is playing up, (what OS do you have??) If not, I would suggest that perhaps the drivers are naffed. In this case, give HP a good ear-bending. If they say they support your OS they should be able to sort it, bottom line.

One (last ditch) trick I use is to go get the next-nearest model drivers, BUT BE CAREFUL, because it has been known for incorrect drivers to cause problems, but it's also sorted quite a few issues for me.

I have a hunch that it's the hp drivers - but narrow the possibility out to be sure, try it on another PC. (same OS if poss)

Good Luck amigo

Tels,

I'm running Windows 98. I would have expected the HP drivers to be well up to it, but evidently not. I'll see if I can get another "nearest set" of drivers to work as you suggest.

Thanks.

Windows 98 should be very well supported, I'm surprised. If you have no joy I would definately think of trying it on another Win98 PC, (if you haven't already), the results would be very useful and revealing. (ie, if it still doesn't work you know it is most likely nothing to do with your set-up, the drivers are probably naffed or incompatible)

Good luck again

Timbo, the first thing that I'd try is loading it to another Win98 pc, the results, as Tels said, would be very helpful.
If you uninstall the drivers, and remove any unknown devices from the Device Manager (Control Panel->System, and Device Manager Tab), and then restart the PC with the scanner plugged in, does it detect it as a scanner and the right make?
If you try that, and it doesnt, you can try copying the install files to hard disk and pointing it to them when it askes you for the driver, and it should install correctly.

If you install the dirvers and it doesnt detect it as a scanner when you plug it in, it could be the scanner that is faulty. Does it come with a parallel cable, and have you tried that? Jay~

Guys,

I've loaded the software onto another Win98 machine and plugged the scanner in via USB. All is working without any problems !!

This obviously points to my machine being dodgy and not the Scanner - doh !! The only difference I can see is that my own machine is running the original Windows 98 (i.e. 4.12.1998) but the other machine is Windows 98 2nd Edition (i.e. 4.12.2222 A) Would this possibly cause me the problems ? If so, anyone know how I can upgrade to 2nd Edition from the basic Win98 ????

Timbo, can you check what happens when you do this....

Uninstall the scanner and drivers for it completely. Also go to the Device Manager, and remove it if its still in there, and any other Unknown devices. Then restart the PC.
Next hook up the scanner and Windows should find a new device, see if it detects it as a scanner, and if so, does it find it as a HP4300C????

Also, did it find it as the right scanner when you installed it first with the drivers installed....????

Please post the results......
Thanks. Jay~

keytech,

Followed your suggestion (even made sure I deleted all references to HP in the registry.) When I booted up, I got a "new hardware found" box saying that it had found a HP Scanjet 4300C. I was then prompted to insert the HP Scanning Software disk. When I did this, the whole HP PrecisionScan LTX 1.1 software was loaded. When I tried to run the Scanner program (hppsapp.exe) I got an invalid page fault in Kernel32.dll.

Interestingly, I found that the STIMON process was now running. If I close this process and then try to open the Scanner program I get the invalid page fault in the hpgdtt.dll .......hummmmmmm.......

I have an HP Scanner...I used get lots of Stimon (not responding) errors..never found a solution.

But for your current problem, have you seen the number of HP related tasks that are listed at
and the number ofcomments regarding there potential use...
Take a look and compare running tasks versus potential to solve your problem..

Just in case anyone has this thread marked, I'd thought I'd let you know that I've now got my scanner working !!!

I spoke to HP Tech Support and after the usual de-install, delete registry, delete USB Devices, re-boot, reinstall - I was still no further forward.

A colleague suggested that I try upgrading from Windows 98 first edition to either Windows 98 SE or Windows ME. As I was at the last resort, I thought I would give it a go. I managed to get hold of a copy of Windows ME, installed it, re-installed my Scanner software and viola !!!

That'll do for me !

Glad to know that TimboA had fixed the problem... I had the same problem but with the HP scanjet 2200c and Compaq 7597 running in win98 second edition. I tried everything, but nothing seems to worked. Finally I decided to run the quick restore CD.... re-install the scanner... and guess what... It worked... I'm not really sure what went wrong, I'm just glad I didn't have to change OS. I was ready to install win 2000 as a last resort. :)

One thing for sure.... this Forum gave me an idea on what to do... Thanx to everyone... !!!
