I run a small home-based business and I have a HP4100N printer that is hooked up to my home network with a Jetdirect 610N card.

I recently started getting some EIO printer errors. Initially I thought it was due to my router, which was acting up, so I switched routers. After installing the new router the errors disappeared, but yesterday I got another EIO error! And now the printer no longer responds when I try to ping it; the light on the router, for that connection, is not on; and the EIO menu on the printer is no longer available! I also tried a new cable between the router and the printer...

A few questions...

I am guessing that it is the card, but is it possible that it is the EIO ports? I tried the card in both ports with the same result... Is there an easy way to test this?

I looked on-line at buying a new card (620N) from HP and they are asking $375!!! Does anyone else make a nic that works with these printers?

Thanks...

I'd suggest you try a cold reset on the printer before replacing the JetDirect card.
Hold down the green button on printer while powering it on.
Continue to hold the button until it reads "Cold Reset" in the display.
This will reset the stored settings on both the printer and JetDirect.
After the cold reset try to print a config page and also check if there is any light in the connector link of the EIO card.
If you have to replace the card and want a cheaper solution you could go for a JetDirect 170X (external) that is by far cheaper and will also work with your printer.

I have found that updating the firmware of the NIC will help with these problems. The 610 is an issue, but HP no longer has a trade in for it. If no lights, it is shot.

Just a follow up... Thanks for the comments... The NIC was shot! Fortunately, I was able to buy one for $80 and I am back up and running.

The cold reset didn't do anything... but at least I know it exists for future reference.
