Is there any way to add additional drivers as well as using the list of alternate drivers that is already listed in the sharing section of the printer properties.

the hp4050 doesnt come with a driver to allow people that are using xp to connect to it.

cheers in advance for your help

paul

You can download a 4050 driver for XP from HP's website. Jennifer Sigman

yeah i know but how do i install this on the server for machines when they are networked.

You get a list of alternate drivers when you select properties of the printers. This is for when the printer is networked. How do i get the XP driver listed in this?

When downloading the driver from HP `s site

load.jsp?prodNum=C4251A&prodName=hp+LaserJet+4050+printer&locale=en_U
S&taskId=8418&taskName=download+drivers+%
26+software&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=25475&prodSeriesNa
me=hp+LaserJet+4050+printer+series

pick a driver for the OS of the server. I`d recommend the PCL 5e driver, as it is reconned as being the most compatible driver in a cross-platform network. When you have the driver installed on the server as local fx. you simply go to the security settings in the driver properties of the printer and select how you want it shared out to the rest of the network. On the client PC (fx. a PC with XP installed) you simple choose add printer, then choose network and then point on the server that has the printer installed. It will then install more or less automatically with the settings from the server installation. Any further questions ? Don`t hessitate to ask

i have done this but windows XP still isnt listed in the list of alternate drivers.

and there is nowhere to add it. So when you try and add printer on the client machine it says you dont have a driver for this.

WinXP will not be listed there is no need for it. Because it is the same as Win NT/2K it falls under that category. When the XP client connects to the server it first sees if the driver on the server is adequate for it, if it is not then the OS checks to see if it has its own built in driver where the driver name matches (which in the case of the 4050 it does). If there is no internal match then the client will pop up the Add Printer Wizard and prompt for the disk with the driver.

This is the same thing that happened when Win2000 came out and a majority of people were still on NT 4.0 server with their print server boxes. Eventually Microsoft released a service pack (or a hot fix, don't remember which) that added Win2000 to the alternate driver list. They will most likely do the same thing (as of SP3 which is on my 2000 Server Printer Server it hasn't appeared).
