HP2600 Printer - TCP/IP ????

Our HP2600 has been working fine until there was a problem in the area and our printer started to automically detect the IP address and everyone lost the ability to print. I was able to manually input the correct IP address and entered the Subnet Mask and the gateway but I think I entered the wrong gateway. How do I figure out the gateway to the printer?

Also, most of the people in the office use laptops and when they take them home for the evening and re-connect in the morning they loose all the printers. Why does this happen and how do I fix it?

Please send comments and advice as I am printer challenged today! Thanks!

Go into the printer menu for tcp/ip and select auto. Turn off/on the unit. Print a config page. This will give you the correct gateway, and then go back in and set it to manual, and use the IP address you want, as well as the rest of the info. Your users need to map to this unit through the add printer in their printers folder and select find printer in the network. Make sure the printer is shared on the printserver driver setup. Also dis-allow configuration rights to all users.
The reason they lose the printer is that the driver may not be installed on the laptop.

Thanks so much for all your help! Everything worked according to plan!

I checked the laptops and the drivers are installed. Can you think of any other reason they would reset themselves after they would umplug their laptops? It appears they lose connection to the print server all together.

Hmmm... it shouldn't lose them, if you've installed the printer on each laptop.

However, if you're using ActiveDirectory, and they're just choosing from published printers, that may cause a problem.... since the laptop thinks the printer is no longer there...

You could write a simple batch file to add the printer back in each time they log onto the network.

Yes, I believe we are using active directory. So, creating a batch file will solve this problem? If so, how do I go about doing that? I have a feeling this is beyond my expertise but if I can try to fix the problem alot of people would be happy. Thanks!
