Have you ever booted this system before?

It looks as if your boot disk is damaged or isn't there because the system can't find the root volume group. Do you have the installation CDs?

I needed a HP-UX box to develop some code off from the server that it was going on so my boss dug one up. So I can't say it ever has been booted and I guess we don't have a cd, he's looking into that now, Got our system from ABB and we don't always get this stuff from them.

I can hear the drive spin up and sometimes the heads move.
Any Idea what to do next?

Thanks

Do you know the model of the system?

When an HP system boots, there is a 10 second window where you can interrupt the boot and then select where you want to boot from (disk, tape, cdrom). It appears from the error you received that it can't find the root volume group on the disk (or the disk has become corrupted).

Hopefully, your boss will be able to find the installation CD. I would recommend a reinstallation, since this system doesn't seem to have a history (and therefore doesn't have any data on it that needs to be kept).

If you have an installation CD in the cdrom, when the boot from the internal disk fails, the system should go into autosearch to search for a boot path. It is at this point it should find (eventually) the cdrom. It it doesn't go into autosearch, you can interrupt the boot and do a manual search for it. Post back if that is the case.

I have look around and messed around trying different things. It is an hp 715/50 btw.
I have tried going to boot admin and trying to boot as a single user (-is), no Quarem (-lq) and matainence mode (-lm) but to no avail.

If the drive is corupt, will the install cd takecare of it? I see on on ebay at $20 now with 5 days to go.

Thanks again

If the data on the drive is corrupt, the install will take care of it. If there is something physically wrong with the drive, probably not.
