I have a HP scanjet 5300c connected via USB to a win2k pro machine. I can usually get away with the first scan (usually) after that the next scan hangs and then windows locks up. Unplugging the power to the scanner results in a blue screen and a reboot.
I have reinstalled the software, removed registry keys, removed Twain files and inf files numerous times, as the HP tech forum suggests, but still no joy.
If anyone has had this problem and knows of a fix it would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I also run W2K Pro with an HP 5370 USB scanner and have never had a problem.
I can suggest several things to do.

If you have a W2K Rescue Disk you could boot from the W2K CD and check the repair function to see if that works.

You can use Add/Remove Hardware and Add/Remove Programs to effect removal.

Although I am not an expert, I suspect that playing with the Registry and removing inf files might be the cause of your problem. If so, and you have a reliable backup, I would restore to a point before you installed the scanner.

If no backup I can recommend Acronis TrueImage Imaging Software and Roxio's GoBack, both of which I use.

If nothing fixes your problem all I can think of, short of a mechanical malfunction is to completely reinstall W2K (and everything else) onto a newly formatted hard drive.

Hi-

I have an Epson Perfection 1200U Photo scanner as well as an Acer for everyday use. I run a dual-boot of Win98 & Win2000 Pro.

When I first set up my scanners, they both worked fine in either op. system. Then I didn't scan for a few weeks. The next time I tried to scan, Win2000 didn't see the scanners- but Win98 has no problem. I tried many, many different "solutions" but never found the answer that would work.

I went online & found way too many posts regarding Win2000 & it's losing contact with scanners. It appears to be a common problem.

If it continues, rather than reload W2K all the time, it may be easier to set up a dual-boot with 98 so you'll always have access to your scanners.
