it's 24 hours after replacing the disc now. unfortunately the array diagnostics program gives me the message "ris copies between drives do not match". how can i fix that?

Not sure what that means but depending on the speed of the server, the array controller, the hard disks, and the size of the array, it could day many hours for the disk to be rebuilt. On my ML530, when the disk is built, I have a flashing light on the disk. Once the light is steady, I can switch out another one.
