I have recently upgraded to Win2K and apparantly I can not use my HP Scanjet 4c with its original card. I don't know much about these things, but a few hours of searching on the net has revealed a lot of posts that say to install a compatible SCSI card and get a new cable, but there does not seem to be a definition of 'compatible'. I am praying someone on this list is running this scanner on Win2K!

My new PC has what appears to be a 68 pin SCSI connector on the back. I didn't count the pins but I found a website that gave the dimensions and it seems about right.

I also found at least one website that suggested a 50 pin SCSI for the scanjet, but I don't know if that is a suggestion or a requirement.

What I would like to know is if I can just get a cable with a 68 pin SCSI on one end for the PC and a Centronix on the other end to fit the scanner, and will it work?

Thanks for any help on this!

Thanks, that looks exactly like the cable I would need to connect my scanner to my system. My follow up question is, will that 'work'?

In other words, I dont know if the articles I found refer to the 50 pin SCSI only mention 50 pin because the 68 wasnt out yet, or if the 4c scanner wont work with a 68 pin connector ... or, is there some technical logic that says if it works with a 50 it should work with a 68.

I guess I could run to staples today and grab a cable, but I hate to spend $30 and bang my head for a couple hours, to find that it doesnt work with the 68 pin.

I have managed to setup an old Artec scanner that used to use the old 50 pin SCSI cable with the newer 68 pin cable.
What you need to check is that you have the appropriate drivers for your SCSI card installed & that you have the correct software for your HP 4c scanner.
You shouldn't have a problem. Fingers crossed.
Is there anyway that you could borrow a cable from a friendly sole just to try it out first?

unfortunately, i purchased a cable and it still wont work... everytime i plug it in the whole system slows to a crawl. i have an old WinME system that I used to run the scanner on , so I think i'm just going to beef that up and network it to my Win2K system and be done with it... thanks to everyone who responded.

Sounds like there is an incompatability with the driver for the scanner & your SCSI card driver.
If you can use your old Win ME system & network them together, seems to be the best solution.

Hi

I have used the Scanjet 4c with Windows 2000 and now use it with Windows XP. I bought an Adaptec 2906 SCSI PCI card card at CompUSA. I believe is was $65. Works perfecly. No drivers needed. Simply buy the card, install the card then boot Windows and use the card.

Hope this helps

The 4c has a standard SCSI centronix connector. Try CompUSA, BestBuy to find a cable with a DB25 on one end and a SCSI centronix on the other. Also search the web. This cable is not so old no one has it. Be prepared to pay between $30 and $40 retail for it. Web is usually cheaper.

Cool! Thanks for the info. I have the scanjet running on my old WinME box for now, which I networked together with my Win2k box. However, I will make a note of the card you mentioned above in case I decide to give it another shot on Win2K... right now, I just have to get productive :)

Man I love my SJ 4c, they should have better support for this baby.

you need to terminate differently if you conect from 68 pins.
there are adapters that terminate the unused part of the wide scsi that is 68 pins. then again you might get away with just hooking it up if you have no wide peripherals inside or out
