I have an HP PSC 2210 that I have had for about 2 years. For the
first 18 months I used it with two different Windows 2000 PC's
with no problems. I used it both connected directly by USB and
over a network with an HP JetDirect 175x print server. It
performed well. I had a problem for a brief time with the
printing on a page being squished into a half page. After
contacting HP support I resolved this by switching to a different
HP driver (for a 550c).
About 6 months ago it started having a problem where I would
send a print job to the print server and it would not print. The
printer will sit there with no errors or unusual activity but the job
would stay in the print queue and not print. I had not changed anything on the printer or on the network, it just started happening one day.
The only way I could figure out how to make it print would be to
hit the black & white copy button. About 80% of the time, the
print job would then come through. Occasionally I would also
get a blank page before or after the print job (from the copy),
but sometimes I would not.
A few months ago I got an Apple PowerBook G4 which uses the
same printer on the JetDirect print server. It exhibits the exact
same behavior. I have tried two different drivers with the
PowerBook (the default that the PowerBook used when it auto-
detected the printer, and the 550c) and it has the same problem
with both.
The jobs hang about 80% of the time. I will see the job in my
PC's print queue manager, and it will hang with a message for
example "Printing page 1, 63%" and it will go no further.
Sometimes even hitting the copy button will not bring the job
through. The printer will sit with no error messages or flashing
lights. Sometimes the display will say "Busy" and pushing any
button will only produce a short beep. I have left it like this for
an hour and it seems hung for good. Pushing the cancel or
power buttons do not change anything. In this case the only
thing I can do is unplug it and plug it back in.
I have tried resetting both the print server and the printer to
factory defaults and reconfiguing them but they continue to
have the same problem. I've printed the test pages from both
and they do not show anything unusual. I've tried powering off
both devices and powering them back up in various sequenes
but that does not help. I've checked and re-checked the various
cables and don't see anything wrong.
When the problems occurs, I do not get any error messages or
flashing lights or anything from the printer, it just sits there.
I am at my wits and and about to sell this printer on eBay for
$20 and get something else. Any advice or information would
be greatly appreciated!
