HP printer very slow.

This HP PSC 1317 is running at less than a snail's pace... Requested a test page from within the HP software. This took 15 minutes to print HP's small picture of two pears! The basic Windows printer test page takes slightly longer. Doing a direct copy, which doesn't involve the computer, is similarly slow.

This is operated by a home user who prints probably 10 to 15 pages a week. Machine is probably just over 2 years old, and has had a recent cartridge change (both). Software says both cartridges are still nearly full. When the print does finally emerge, it is clear and full coloured. Tried the printer on a different PC with same results. Computers were running XP and W2K, both with plenty of RAM and HDD space.

Any clues as to why it's so lethargic?

Did you use a different cable when you connected the printer to another machine? Is this USB?
Try another cable.

Thanks for replying. This printer only has a USB interface. Yes, used different cable. I have also just tried a SEMI-FULL RESET. Didn't make any difference - it took 10 minutes to settle down again and for the ON/RESUME light to go solid.

Any other suggestions?

Having tried the SEMI-FULL RESET which didn't help, I have been searching for info on a possible COMPLETE-FULL RESET. However, nothing found so far. Anyone any clues as to how this might be achieved?

Thanks. All that are listed appear to relate to software issues. The fault manifests itself before the printer even gets attached to a computer. I believe this is either a hardware or firmware fault which is why I am interested in finding out if a some sort of FULL-RESET is possible. The printer was working correctly, and suddenly developed this problem a couple of days ago...

OK, sorry for giving false hope. I know HP do firmware for many of thier printers as I have about 15 connected to the network at work & have updated many of them, to try & sort problems. I have yet to find a firmware for this model though.
Can't even find a service manual. I have a couple more places to look & will post anything I find that may be of use.

Just found this on the HP website:

Step three: Ensuring the paper sensor is clean and not damaged
The all-in-one product paper sensor plays an important role in determining the print speed.
Printing a self-test or demo page will ensure that the paper sensor is in proper working condition. If the page completes in less than 40 seconds, the sensor is working correctly.
Even if the sensor is working correctly, the printer driver might need to have the paper sensor turned off. To turn off the sensor, follow the steps below:

1.
Open the Printer folder, right-click the printer and click Printing Preferences or Properties.
2.
From the Properties box, click the Paper/Quality or Features tab.
3.
Under the Paper Type section, open the menu and select Plain Paper instead of Automatic.
This will disable the paper sensor and increase the print speed.

Don't know if it is relevent.

Kestrel1, thanks for your persistence with this one - I appreciate your efforts! Unfortunately, I'm ahead of you on that one - I think we've both read the same section on HP's website! It was already set to Plain Paper, and I'd tried setting it to Automatic, switching off printer and PC, then switching on again and resetting it back to Plain, just to see if "working" the software switch would help. It didn't...

The user is a fairly careful individual, but nevertheless it could be that this sensor has become damaged. I am not sure what form this sensor is likely to take, i.e. a mechanical or optical device perhaps. The appropriate service manual would probably give that info...

Yes, probably would. I haven't managed to find one though. If it is optical, I would say it is dirty, more than damaged. It is just finding the little sod.

Thanks for the info Lowlanderok. Printer has been assigned to the scraphead, but userguide may come in handy as they're quite popular...
