I have an HP Pavillion 6355 that has a habit of beeping almost like a warning then freezing up. It is not windows specific because it will do it in Windows, my accounting software, and whatever else it feels like. HP says it is a hardware problem and would have to be sent in but I probly blew the warranty when I put in the 3com card. But has been in there for a while and no problems until recently.

Any Ideas?

Thanks

I'm running an HP Pavilion with 466mHz Celeron and 200 megRAM - so that 100% CPU usage was pretty shocking, when only opening windows explorer.

My war stories are posted elsewhere... but you may want to know that the little plastic sticky tape that "seals" your Pavilion, says (Breaking this seal does NOT invalidate the warranty.) [my emphasis]

Anyway, I've been thru the wringer, and microsoft says that HP's version of Win98SE is defective. I loaded straight win98 and everything runs really well except that I cannot recognize the onboard sound chip (HP says its a Cirrus) and the downloaded Cirrus drivers aren't recognized. HP suggests I install another sound card for my speech-to-text. Since the onboard chip never worked for speech recognition anyway, I'll probably do that.
--mcy

this sounds like a classic heat issue. start your system with the cover off and look at the CPU (a square or rectangle with a heatsink on it) there should be a fan on it and it should be running smoothly. if not it will need to be freed if jammed of replaced if defective. run your machine when it beeps and freezes gently place your finger on the heatsink if it is around 80 degrees f. it is ok and the problem is elsewere if it is HOT you will neet to get a better cooling fan or new processor. let me know if this helps audio900@mc.net (you can buy a cpu fan at a local computer shop or Radio Shack. remember the thermal heat sink goo it really helps.)
