Hi all,

I have a HP Pavilion dv5000 Laptop which is running Windows XP. When any USB device is plugged into any of the 3 USB ports, none of them are recognised. You get the message in the bottom right that the device isn't recognised.

I have uninstalled all the USB related devices and rebooted several times. I have ensured that power management of them is turned off and I have even tried removing the battery from the laptop to displace any static issues.

Now I have taken this a step further and ran a Linux boot CD on the laptop and again the USB Ports aren't recognised, so now I'm starting to think they are faulty even though 2 are on one side of the laptop and 1 on the other.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this and where the problem might be?

Thanks.

Hey Gav,

Have you nosed around in the BIOS to make sure there is not a setting for disabling the USB ports? I would guess that the "optimal defaults" setting would enable all peripheral ports.

Otherwise, if you've tested w/ Windows and Linux then I'd say that's a proper troubleshooting procedure, and you might be needing a new mainboard.

Gav,

Don't know if this will help, but at this point it might be a shot: thread602-1313722
