I am trying to install a hp officejet printer (4100 series) and its asking for my windows 98 disk. is there anyway i can install the printer without the disk?
Well, it wants the disk because it is trying to find a file that is not currently on your computer. For the most part, you don't need the disk if you have the cab files on your hard drive. Typically the cab files are placed in C:\windows\options\cabs
If your cab files aren't there, you can do a search on google or your favorite engine and find the exact file that the install is looking for. I've found many .dll files that way.
The Win98 disk is not specific, other than First Edition, or Second Edition. So, if you need be, you could probably borrow a win98 disk to get the file you need. Also, copy the cab files from it before you give it back, you may need other files at a later time.
Windows 98 did not, by default, copy all the CD files to the hard drive like Windows Millennium did. I got in the habit that when I installed Win98, I'd first copy the CD to it's own folder on the C:\ drive. Then I'd install from there, not the CD, and that way whenever it asked for the CD, I'd just direct it to the C: drive.
I'd suggest getting the drivers from HP.com since the latest Win98/Me drivers would be the best to use.
Never said that they were copied there by default. I said that they are typically found at that location. Most MFG put them there, but not all. Of they are placed there by whatever technician does the Windows Install, because they realize that sometimes, people lose the CD. As for getting the drivers from HP's website, I highly doubt that the downloaded driver will have the necessary missing file that your Windows 98 computer is asking for. The reason. HP knows that it's on the Windows CD, and why would they add it to the download. It would only increase the size of the file you need to Download.
