We're having a problem with an HP LaserJet 4050. It has 3 trays: Tray one is the manual feed tray, and trays 2 and 3 have 8.5" x 11" plain paper. When tray 2 runs out of paper, it's supposed to get paper from tray 3. However, it acts like tray 3 doesn't exist and you get an error message saying "Tray 2 Load Plain Letter." Does anyone know what could be causing this all of the sudden?

Thanks

Is it possible that the printer has been "bumped" and it is not making good electrical contact with tray 3? That sounds most logical.

What happens if you specify tray 3 as the preferred tray.

A few things to check...

Make sure the paper size/type on the printer is equal on both trays. If type/size is different for the trays, the printer will stop and ask for correct media. Eventually check and print a config page to verify the printer recognizes the paper size/type correctly.

Verify the driver and application (if from Windows) is set to pick on paper type not tray (Set tray to auto select if possible) This will ensure the printer is not locked to one specific tray and force the appplication/driver to check the printers configuration and pick the paper dependant on the size/type settings recognized by the printer.
