I have a problem picking paper from the lower tray, although the top fold-down tray picks fine if I load sheets there. Print is also good, so no problem with cartridge, fuser, etc.
How much needs to be dismantled to find the trouble?
Is this a known problem with the lower pick mechanism?
Any comments appreciated.
Ian

You should looking for paper jamem on the path from the tray and the toner look for paper jam I think that it will be.

If you get a flashlite and watch the pickup action from the rear, you'll probably notice it picking up the paper, then reversing it back in the tray. (too many metal filings in the seperation roller clutch) Pop it open, remove about 1/2 the filings (reduced the torque) and re-install. If the feed and separation rollers are worn, replace them. Sometimes just replacing the rollers works for awhile, which is a good indication the clutch needs to be popped.

Thanks for the advice, guys.
K1c2 - I did notice the paper had been started to pick, as it was about half inch out of the drawer. However, I couldn't discover how to get at the drive clutch to check it. Do I need to disassemble the printer base?
BTW - the printer has been working fine for about 2-years with no trouble before this. :)

Check the page count by doing a self test. Those rollers will last 40-75k pages. If those rollers have no 'teeth' just order some new ones from HP. There will be one roller on the tray and one right above it on the machine. Another problem is the trays paper stopper shifting back a notch. Double check your paper sizing notch and make sure its locked in position. If it doesn't work still do the clutch. Put not your trust in princes.

k1c2-
Thanks to your advice I think it's fixed! The mag clutch was full of filings and very tight, but freed up nicely when I cleaned it out. The printer now picks fine every time.
Grateful for your tips, guys!

Hi I am having the same problem but it is not picking up the paper at all.

Remove the pickup roller feed roller from the tray...the clutch is behind it. Press the stem on the desk to pop it open, take a business card and scrape one half of the filings on the magnet into a pile and pinch them off. Snap clutch back together and re-install.

hey. i've been wondering for ages why ours has been doing this jamming.

my boss insists it's faulty paper. doh!
i think the reason here is more likely.

thanks guys ===============
