Is anyone as frustrated as me with the new HP recovery disk policy. They used to supply a OS disk and a drivers disk. Now you have to make 12 recovery CDs from a disk partition!!!!!!!! and it takes at least 3 hours. Progress????????
 
Yeah, probably why I always format my laptops and reinstall windows with my Windows CD's. that way I don't depend on HP.

And my recovery CD's is always an image of the drive after being setup they way I like it.
That way I get rid of all the HP crap installed. and have nice functional laptop that i can recover in less that 5 minutes.

Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.
 
How new is this policy? We just bought a couple dozen HP laptops (nx6125) about a month ago, and they all came with driver and OS CDs. They used to come with a set of restore disks, but they switched to the OS + drivers CDs recently, which I think makes it a little easier to do a restore to the original config.
 
The policy would appear to have been introduced within the last few weeks.
 
We sell HP gear almost exclusively and were just as disconcerned as you guys when they changed policy. Like vacunita, we always installed Windows without the HP stuff for our customers, so we had to review our policy too.

Our conclusion is that we go the HP way. The security manager, especially with the new notebooks with the embedded TPM security chip, is vital if you carry around sensitive company information.

The recovery manager is a problem for ordinary users. Even if your lucKy to have a DL DVD drive, it is still time consuming creating your recovery disks. We are fortunate in that we have a dedicated server where we store the recovery for our customers, so it is reasonably quick.

HP now do a NAS docking station which will store the recovery for both the locally connected laptop or for a network attached notebook.

Another problem our users have run into since HP went to the recovery partition is the computer not recognizing a USB drive. Our network drives start with F: so the new HPs have a C, D (dvd drive), E (recovery partition) and then our network drives start. When they plug in their USB drives they aren't recognized until either disconnecting the F: drive or going into disk management and changing the drive letter of the jump drive. I've done this already on several of the new computers but the USB drive always revert back to F. Short of rewriting the logon script that maps the drives and causing days worth of confusion and phone calls about the missing F: drive, I haven't found a permanent solution.
 
We haven't hit that one yet as - only through pure luck - none of our network drives use drive letter F. Thanks for that snippet.

We just started seeing the recovery partition on the desktop PCs that we purchased this month. I weep for our PC techs now.

Regarding the F: drive issue, do yourself a favor and get rid of drive letters completely. Just change your login scripts to add a shortcut for the network share to My Network Places. That way you don't have to worry about drive letter conflicts, or running out of drive letters, etc.

Yeah, we have purchased quite a few of the nx6125's and nx6325's and they've all included an OS CD and Recovery CD. Just received a shipment last week that still had them.
