Did you check whether there is am extremely faint image on the screen? It might only be the bulb gone dead - happens with most screen failures. The exchange those would be not a big thing ~$20 depending on manufacturer and model.
overlooked the fact the VGA isn't there either. In this case you will have to send in the laptop ofr repair - if it is still under warranty.
It might be a bad motherboard or videocard ( if it is not part of the motherboard)
In either case it sounds like a more serious problem - if it is an older laptop - from my experience - fixing the problem often is more expensive thatn a new unit.
