Hooked up a Jetdirect Ex plus to my home network that includes 2 laptops- one Win98 and one NT. Netgear router, HP Deskjet 820Cse printer.

When I try to print a test page from the win98 pc I get no response and it hangs. From the NT pc I get "Printer Port Problem...There is a problem accessing the printer port" although it actually starts to print but doesn't finish.

I bought the Jetdirect used off ebay without any installtion procedures so I downloaded and installed the proper "Hp Install Network Printer Wizard" and have went through the setup without any evident problems- until the end where it tries to print the test page.

There is a "test" button the the JetDirect Plus but does nothing when pushed.

Please help! I've never installed a print server before and I'm not having much luck troubleshooting on HP's website.

Unfortunately, the Deskjet 820 is a Windows-only printer (i.e., most of the print logic is in the driver on the host machine,) and does not work with any of the JetDirect products. From the same printer family, the Deskjet 850s, 870s, and 890s all have no problems with the JetDirect boxes. The 710s and 720s were also Windows-only models. I am not aware of which current Deskjets are JetDirect compatible, though most should work. I would check with HP's web site to be sure. The words to beware of are "host-based."
