I have several hp deskjet printers connected directly to brand new desktops and laptops all running W98 SE, the problem is that when the computers are turned on during there startup the printer is sent a signal which causes it to load a piece of paper and then sit there with the rresume light flashing. Once you press the resume button it spits out the page with the @ printed at the top, and then the printer works fine. This is more of annoyance than a problem, but we have sent several emails to HP with no responce. Anyone have any ideas ?

Are you sure you are using the exact correct HP print driver? You can see the name of the driver by going into the control panel- go to printers and right click on the printer. Choose properties and choose the Details tab. Hope this helps.

Yes I have verified I am using the correct drivers from HP, we have also purchased HP cables to see if this will correct the problem, but we have no change. I have noticed in the computer CMOS setup that the printer ports not only can be setup as Standard and Bi-Directional, but they also have a ECP setting.I have tried the Bi-Directional and when the computer starts up, Win98 finds a new device and installs it. Then when I change the printer settings to attach to the new port and reboot, I receive the same problem.

I have the same problem with a Hp 880C, also running Win 98 se.The blank page that comes out of the printer does not have a @ on it though. I have contacted Hp who do not want to know, I have now given up.You could try changing the cmos setting for the parallel port to normal. Sorry I can't help

That was the first thing that was checked. We are using Hewlett Packard IEEE 1284 six fott cables per HP instructions. This is only happening on the machines running Windows 98 se.

I have always left the printer port to standard, ECP sometimes causes weird problems.
