HP Deskjet 720C on Metaframe 1.8 not working

I know that printing can be a minefield on MF 1.8 but we have quite a wide range of HP printers which we use without too many problems. I'm not bothered about getting this doing colour printing or anything, just basic black and white is fine.

I've installed the driver on the MF server (the version is 10.3). When the user logs onto MF the printer is auto-mapped as you would expect. However when the user tries to print from any application she says a "no default printer is installed" appears. If I try and print a test page from the mapped printer I get errors saying the "driver is not installed - do I want to install it?". If I click yes it says "the driver failed to install - only spooler properties will be displayed".

Has anyone else got this type of printer working on MF 1.8, or does anyone have any suggestions on how I can solve this?

Thanks

Make sure that the drivers are exactly the same on the server as on the client side. What you also can try is download con2prt.exe from the internet en use it to create a mapping ( con2prt /c \\printeserver\printqueue ). If you then can print to it, the driver works.

We remap 720C to 660s which works.

We also occasionaly install the printer on the client using the supported engine drivers. It's an admin headache but allows Citrix users immediate utilisation of their new printer.

Are familar with printer inf mapping? wtsuprn.inf is the file name. Here is an example of one of mine. Notice that depending upon the driver that you use on the workstation, matters to the mapping on the server. To find what name, either look at the event logs that say it couldn't map, it will tell you the name, or look at the clients machine. see below.
