I've been using the HP Colorado 14GB External on a W2k box for some time. For some reason, it now is refusing to work properly. It still functions fine on another Windows 95 computer I use, so I don't think the tape drive is at fault. I use HP Colorado Backup II on the W95 machine.

W2k Pro SP1
Abit KT-7 (non raid)
Veritas Backup Exec Desktop Pro
256 Meg
Visioneer 3100 Scanner

I recently installed the Visioneer Scanner, but the tape drive worked after that install. Initially , the problem surfaced when doing a backup, and the scanner, which was powered on, began to flash it's light , and vibrate wildly. I kid you not. I turned off the scanner and the backup failed. The scanner lived, and is functioning.

The error report was 'Backup Device Reports Unexpected Error 08-OE-23-01-030C.'

Further attempts at backing up or reading tapes, gave the same or similar errors.

What could have happened here? I have not made any changes to the system config that would have caused this. I also tried changing the Parallel Port settings to Normal from ECP/EPP, to no avail.

Any suggestions appreciated.

I suppose the the tape drive is a parallel port drive as well.
In that case, the scanner sends a signal back to the computer every so often to verify connectivity. If this happens during a backup, you screwed. You should never have other parallel port devices be switched on when running a backup to your parallel port tape drive. Not only with backup exec, but with other backup software as well.
You might need to reinstall the backup software from scatch to reinitialize the drive and driver.

Never had the problem under W95, though I probably had the scanner turned off most of the time. The backup problem persisted even after turning off the scanner. Threw me off.

However, there's some scanner driver that loads automatically under W2k , an icon appears that gives you the option of 'pausing' the scanner. I assume this turns of any handshaking that might be attempted even with the scanner off.

I set that to 'pause' and was able to backup with no problem. Looks like problem solved. Thanks for the advice.
