Hi. I have a user who has HP 4500 color laserjet attached directly to her computer. When she prints color pictures using it, portions of the printout print out completely in black. This computer is running Windows 2000 and I would like to note that when I had with me I managed to print out to the same type of printer (only on the network) and it printed out the same documents just fine. I have her using the PCL 5e driver. She had already tried all of the other latest drivers on HPs website with no success. I am running out of ideas. Please help. Thanks.

Is there enough memory in the PC to fully render the picture? Also, is there enough memory in the printer to do likewise?

Just a thought or two.

Yes and yes. We hooked up another windows 2000 computer to it and it worked just fine.

Run a check on what service pack the Win2k pc has installed. All newer HP printers requires at least SP 2 on Win2K to work properly. Also try and connect the printer directly via a parallel cable and see what happens compared to the a network connection.

The computer is running Win2K SP3 and it is being connected via parallel cable. Any other ideas? Thanks.

When connected to the parallel port the port mode has to be set for ECP or bi-ddirectional on the host computer. Check these settings under device settings in Windows. If not present, check if it`s activated in the PC`s BIOS.
Check if the parallel port is set to bi-directional under Ports in the drivers settings also. I presume the cable is attached correctly and complies to the IEEE 1284 standard. For further troubleshooting on the subject please visit these URL`s : and

Just wanted to report to everyone that the problem was solved by installing a network card in the computer and putting it up on the network. For whatever reason, it just would not work properly with windows 2000 when connected locally. Hope that this helps someone in the future and thanks to all for helping me out!
